The young Utah Jazz haven’t had the best start to the 2024-2025 NBA season, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 2-8 record. Committing to a full rebuild, the Jazz have the likes of John Collins, Collin Sexton, and Lauri Markkanen on their starting 5, getting them valuable minutes but not really getting much production.

Without any real star players on the team, the Jazz have been seriously struggling to finish out games, especially with Collins leading the team in scoring at just 17.1 ppg. Moreover, the Jazz defence hasn’t been a strong point in any way outside of Walker Kessler pulling down 10.7 rebounds and swatting 2.8 shots a night.

The Dallas Mavericks have built on their success from last year, even if their record doesn’t look like it just yet. Sitting at 5-6 in the Western Conference, you would think the Mavs are shaping up to be a bottom-of-the-pack team but have far more talent than many give them credit for.

Luka Dončić continues to lead one of the more potent offences in the league, with Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson at his side. Whether it’s outside shooting or getting to the rim, offence is the least of Dallas’s worries.
However, Dallas’s defence has been leaving much to be desired, with lacking perimeter defence and no big man down low the block shots or at least redirecting them.

Despite winning in their last head-to-head matchup during the NBA preseason, the Utah Jazz are going to have their hands full with the Dallas Mavericks, especially on defence. The high-powered perimeter scoring brought by the trio of Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson will likely be far too much for the young roster to handle.

With deadly slashing, world-class shooting, and two of the shiftiest guards in the NBA, there’s not much the Jazz can do other than try to slow down their scoring at the very least. Even in a 1-on-1 setting, there is nobody on the Jazz who can lock up either Dončić or Irving – they just don’t have the speed or basketball IQ.
Nonetheless, the Maverick’s defence isn’t all that great either, especially on the inside, which should give the Jazz an opportunity to attack the paint.

If someone like Lauri Markkanen sets up shop down low or near the high post, the Mavericks really won’t have an answer.
The Mavericks should realistically have this one in the bag, especially coming off three back-to-back losses where they lost by less than five points; they’re due.

Dončić is an offensive weapon no matter which way you look at it. He oftentimes takes on the role of running the offence, getting tons of touches, and likely grabbing the first basket in many matches.

While it may not be as much as Nikola Jokić, Dončić is an absolute triple-double machine, averaging a clean 28.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.9 assists already on the year. Adding a couple of rebounds and assists really wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the Dončić, especially against a weaker team like the Jazz.
