Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union Preview and Team News
Toronto FC Team News
The 16th round of the Major League Soccer competition will see Toronto FC take on Philadelphia Union at home on Wednesday, May 28.
Toronto, who are currently ranked 13th in the league table, know that they have to do everything in their power to climb out of this position and into one of strength. Despite their recent 1-2 loss to Nashville, the Canadian side may feel that they can take up the challenges thrown their way by a high-flying Union side in this encounter.
However, breaking into the top ten of the league table will not be easy by any means. Toronto usually like to play sideways passes in order to build their game, and manager Robin Fraser is renowned for the emphasis he puts on defensive solidity. Nonetheless, their defenders have been far from immaculate this season, and this has given rise to a lot of questions about Fraser’s tactics.

Toronto’s lack of creativity up front has relegated them to defending inside their own half and then focusing more on mounting counter-attacks on their opponents rather than creating chances of their own accord and unlocking opposition defences.
In this game, Deandre Kerr, Jonathan Osorio, Kobe Franklin, Nicksoen Gomis, Richie Laryea and Petretta will be unavailable for selection due to injuries.
However, the suspensions incurred by Federico Bernardeschi and Kosi Thompson are going to worry Fraser even more since these two players had the potential of changing the nature of the game with their very presence on the pitch.
Toronto FC predicted lineup vs Philadelphia Union (4-2-3-1): Johnson; Stefanovic, Long, Rosted, Petretta; Flores, Longstaff; Brynhildsen, Insigne, Corbeanu; Etienne.
Philadelphia Union Team News
Philadelphia Union have been one of the teams to beat this season (they are ranked 1st in the table), and they will be keen on picking up all three points on offer against Toronto. Union have fired in all three departments so far: attack, midfield and defence, and one cannot help but feel that they will be able to coast against Toronto.
In their recent game against Inter Miami, they could have picked up all the points on offer, but a couple of late goals from their opponents (including one from the great Lionel Messi) saw the match end in a 3-3 draw.

Andre Blake will be unavailable for selection in this game against Toronto due to a knee injury while Ian Glavinovich has sustained a meniscus injury which will sideline him for the better part of a month. Neil Pierre, too, has strained his knee, and will not be available in this game.
For Union, attacker Tai Baribo is their most crucial player. He is known for running into wide and open spaces, creating chances and then converting them into goals. Baribo is currently the leading goalscorer of the league (13), and will be expected to add to his tally against a measly-looking Toronto defence.

Union play with a 3-4-1-2 formation in which Damiani, operating as the central attacking midfielder in the number ’10’ position, is the fulcrum through whom most balls from midfield move forward into the final third.
As always, he will have a crucial role to play in this game as well, sitting just behind Baribo, and being the reason why his team have been able to exude confidence in a flawless way in the attacking third. His passing, lobbing, crossing and shooting are all top-notch, and something that people would pay to watch.
Philadelphia Union predicted lineup vs Toronto FC (3-4-1-2): Rick; Westfield, Glesnes, Harriel; Wagner, Sullivan, Lukic, Jacques; Damiani; Vassilev, Baribo.
Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union Prediction
- Pick: Philadelphia Union to win or draw
- Odds: -263 (20Bet)
- Score prediction: Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union
Philadelphia Union are the favourites to win or draw this game, and we expect them to do so without even batting an eyelid. Union are one of the favourites to win the MLS this season, and they will not face too many challenges from Toronto’s weak-looking attacking unit.
There have been a total of 33 games recorded between these teams in the past, out of which Union have won 14 and Toronto have won 11.

The rest of the eight matches were played out as drawn encounters between the sides. These statistics show that Union have a historical advantage over their opponents. The same goes for recent form, given that they have beaten Toronto in two out of their last three encounters.
Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union Prediction, Betting Tip
- Pick: Both teams to score
- Odds: -169 (20Bet)
We expect both teams to get onto the scoresheet in this game. For Union, Baribo will be the main attraction while Damiani, sitting just behind him in the number ‘ten’ position, will play the role of the creator.
Toronto, meanwhile, have relied heavily on Federico Bernardeschi, who has created the most big chances for them (9). However, he has been suspended for this game. Bernardeschi also has the most shots on target per match for Toronto (1.1), and his absence will be deeply felt in the Toronto attacking unit.
Bernardeschi’s Italian teammate Lorenzo Insigne, who used to ply his trade for Napoli in the past but has now moved to the USA, will have to step up in his absence. The former Serie A player will be responsible for the flamboyant manner in which Toronto operate in the attacking third. Still, he may not be able to overturn their team’s flagging fortunes.
