Betis vs Lyon Preview and Team News

Betis Team News

This is one of the standout fixtures on matchday four of this season’s UEFA Europa League. Betis are aiming for a long run in the competition, but they could do with a victory here to boost their chances of finishing in the top eight and advancing directly to the round of 16.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have only lost one of their last 11 games across all competitions. A rotated lineup could manage only a 0-0 draw at Genk in their last European encounter, but they were dominant 3-0 winners against Mallorca in La Liga on Monday, with right winger Antony scoring two brilliant long-range goals.

With their main playmaker, Isco, still injured, the Andalusians have looked to move the ball wide a bit quicker than normal. Ez Abde has also impressed on the left flank, while Pablo Fornals has offered a degree of control from a deep position.

Some changes are expected here, with just a 72-hour turnaround. As well as Isco, Pellegrini is also missing Junior Firpo due to an injury. Pau López is an additional fitness concern, which should see Álvaro Valles start in goal.

Betis predicted lineup vs Lyon (4-2-3-1): Valles; Rodríguez, Gómez, Natan, Ruibal; Deossa, Fornals; Abde, Lo Celso, Antony; Bakambu.

Lyon Team News

There have been plenty of surprising results in the opening weeks of the Europa League, but Lyon are the only one of the outright tournament favorites to have yet slipped up. With three wins from three so far, they’ll be targeting a top-two finish, which would guarantee them home advantage in the second legs throughout the knockout rounds.

They’ve only managed to draw their last two fixtures in Ligue 1. Following a 3-3 thriller against Paris FC, their trip to Brest on Sunday ended goalless. Paulo Fonseca’s side created just 0.2 xG in that game, with their threat very limited, but the match was conditioned by an eighth-minute red card to their full-back, Hans Hateboer.

Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah are their two injury absentees for this trip to Spain. Fonseca is also likely to opt for some light rotation from his last lineup, but his regular 4-2-3-1 structure should remain in place.

Lyon predicted lineup vs Betis (4-2-3-1): Greif; Abner, Mata, Niakhaté, Hateboer; Tessmann, De Carvalho; Moreira, Tolisso, Merah; Satriano.

Betis vs Lyon Prediction

  • Pick: Betis to win
  • Odds: -109 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Betis 2-1 Lyon

Betis have performed well in their home games this season and look to have fully adapted to life in their new temporary venue. They’ve also quickly settled on a structure that has worked even without their best player.

The combination of pace and skill they have on the flanks should make this a really busy night for Lyon’s defenders. One of the French team’s main vulnerabilities this term has been coping against wide attacks, as Hateboer’s weekend sending off wasn’t the first time that one of their full-backs has been caught out. That has to be a major area of concern against Betis’ in-form wingers.

Betis vs Lyon Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Antony to score anytime
  • Odds: +225 (20Bet)

Without any kind of preseason at his previous club, Manchester United, it was always going to take Antony a while to build up to his best level following a deadline-day move to Betis. He was instantly thrown into the action, but it took a few more weeks for the Brazilian to rediscover his sharpness in front of goal.

He’s certainly reached that point now with some spectacular efforts in recent weeks. The 25-year-old has thrived on the added responsibility of being the leader of this team from an attacking standpoint. He should be full of confidence heading into this match and looks likely to add to his tally of 14 shots from his last four appearances.
