Rangers vs Roma Preview and Team News

Rangers Team News

It’s been a miserable season so far for Glasgow Rangers. Russell Martin’s reign ended early last month with a 1-1 draw against Falkirk. They’ve won two of their three league games since then, but have also suffered a 0-3 defeat to Brann in the Europa League and a 1-3 extra-time loss to rivals Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish League Cup.

Danny Röhl has a tough job on his hands, particularly in the competition. With no points on the board from three matches in the UEL league phase, the Scottish side will need to pull off an upset against Roma on Thursday night if they’re to stand any chance of avoiding an early exit.

The new boss likes his teams to be quick in transition but has the flexibility to change his system and adopt a more direct style at times. That has been viewed as a break from the more rigid, possession-based methods employed by Martin, which failed to work at Ibrox.

Light changes are expected from their weekend defeat. The hosts will again be without Rabbi Matondo and Dujon Sterling due to injuries.

Rangers predicted lineup vs Roma (3-4-2-1): Butland; Cornelius, Souttar, Djiga; Meghoma, Diomande, Raskin, Tavernier; Aasgaard, Danilo; Miovski.

Roma Team News

It’s been a mixed start for Gian Piero Gasperini in his new role as Roma boss. His record stands at eight wins and five defeats from 13 games across all competitions. The Giallorossi head into this encounter following a 1-0 defeat to Milan in Serie A, while they’ve also lost their last two Europa League fixtures.

The ex-Atalanta coach has consistently used a back three, but has tried various structures in a bid to get the best out of his midfield and attacking players. He opted for a flat 3-5-2 at San Siro at the weekend, and while his side had plenty of the ball and created some good opportunities, they made far too many defensive errors, allowing a season-high 3.3 xG across the 90 minutes.

In Europe, they’re unfortunate not to have more than three points. They were the dominant force in a 2-1 defeat against Viktoria Plzeň on matchday three and arguably shaded their 1-0 loss to Lille before that.

The other big setback over the weekend was an injury to key player Paulo Dybala. The Argentine will be unavailable in Scotland as a result, while Angeliño and Evan Ferguson are also expected to miss out.

Roma predicted lineup vs Rangers (3-5-2): Svilar; Ndicka, Mancini, Çelik; Tsimikas, Pellegrini, Cristante, Koné, Wesley; Bailey, Dovbyk.

Rangers vs Roma Prediction

  • Pick: Roma to win
  • Odds: -123 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Rangers 0-2 Roma

Roma are performing better than their record of just three points from three Europa League games suggests. They’re comfortably one of the strongest teams in this competition, but their slow start means Gasperini can’t afford to take too many chances in terms of resting important players here.

They’ve been effective when attacking on the flanks, particularly on the right half of the pitch, while the Italians also carry a genuine set-piece threat. That should result in them having too much quality for a poor Rangers side that have struggled badly on the European stage this season and lost all of their last six continental fixtures.

Rangers vs Roma Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Roma to score over 1.5 goals
  • Odds: -118 (20Bet)

There have been slight improvements in Rangers’ first two Scottish Premiership matches under Röhl, but it’ll take the German more time to fix all of their issues. Defensively, they still looked vulnerable at full-back in their last Europa League outing, with Brann’s winger Bård Finne creating two goals.

Losing the Old Firm derby against an equally out-of-form Celtic at the weekend must also have left a significant dent in their already low morale.

While Dybala is a big miss for Roma, they have many other attacking options. Leon Bailey has the ability to beat defenders and produce moments of quality, while Artem Dovbyk’s physicality will also ask questions of the home center-backs.
