Portugal vs Spain Preview and Team News

Portugal Team News

Of the five or six leading contenders to win this World Cup, Portugal have been the most disappointing. Their star-studded midfield, which features Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes, was overrun by Colombia in the group stage. The Seleção das Quinas also struggled to break down an aging Croatia side in the Round of 32.

Roberto Martínez’s men won that game 2-1, but only after Joško Gvardiol’s stoppage-time goal was controversially ruled out. There remain many doubts about this Portuguese outfit, most notably surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and his limited off-the-ball contributions at the age of 41.

The good news for Martínez is that he should have a full squad to select from in Texas. Major changes are unlikely, although Nélson Semedo could be drafted into the backline at right-back in place of the more attack-minded João Cancelo.

Portugal predicted lineup vs Spain (4-2-3-1): D. Costa; Mendes, Veiga, Dias, Semedo; Vitinha, J. Neves; Leão, Fernandes, Neto; Ronaldo.

Spain Team News

It wasn’t an entirely convincing group stage from Spain. They only registered five shots in their final outing against Uruguay, but Luis de la Fuente’s team still advanced from first place.

Their performance against Austria in the Round of 32 was much closer to the level La Roja showed when they won Euro 2024. They played with intensity and purpose from the start, moving the ball quickly and attacking on both flanks. Lamine Yamal continued working his way back to full fitness by clocking up 85 minutes in the 3-0 win.

However, Spain played their best soccer down the left flank against Austria. Marc Cucurella assisted two goals from full-back, while Álex Baena registered an assist and five key passes. That should secure his place in what’s likely to be an unchanged lineup from De la Fuente, who still has injury concerns over Nico Williams and Yéremy Pino.

Spain predicted lineup vs Portugal (4-2-3-1): Simón; Cucurella, Laporte, Cubarsí, Porro; Rodri, Pedri; Baena, Olmo, Yamal; Oyarzabal.

Portugal vs Spain Prediction

  • Pick: Spain to win
  • Odds: -108 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Portugal 1-2 Spain

Spain’s priority during the group stage was to secure top spot and give Yamal time on the pitch to rebuild his fitness following a hamstring injury. Apart from a short spell against Saudi Arabia, their play was often slow, but they took a huge step in the right direction by outclassing Austria last time out.

La Roja have now gone more than two years without losing in regulation time. They are a balanced side that can threaten with their precise passing in central areas or electric wide play. The reigning European champions are also yet to concede at this World Cup.

By contrast, Portugal still haven’t produced their best soccer in North America. PSG stars Vitinha and João Neves are showing signs of fatigue following another long season, while Fernandes has struggled to find much space to operate in. Aside from their comfortable win against outsiders Uzbekistan, they’ve only scored two goals from open play in their other three matches.

Portugal vs Spain Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Mikel Oyarzabal to score anytime
  • Odds: +150 (20Bet)

The big change in this Spanish side over the past two years has seen Mikel Oyarzabal replace former captain Álvaro Morata as the team’s first-choice striker. He’s a more clinical finisher and excels at operating in tight spaces in the penalty area.

That has helped the Real Sociedad forward thrive in such a creative team, with great service coming from both flanks. He has already netted four goals in four appearances at this competition. The 29-year-old also averaged a goal every 74 minutes during qualifying.
