Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool Preview

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are the revelation of the Premier League season, as they unexpectedly find themselves in third place in mid-January. In their last two terms, they struggled to stay in the competition, finishing 16th and 17th. Nuno Espírito Santo was appointed in 2023 after two short (unsuccessful) spells at Tottenham and Al-Attihad.

Forest are the lowest-scoring team of the top ten but rely on striker Chris Wood’s scoring and a resilient defence. They’ve scored 29 goals, making them the only club in the top 12 to score under 30 goals in 20 matches.

The team progressed to the next round of the FA Cup last weekend after defeating Luton (2-1). Eleven first-team players were sidelined on the occasion, with Nuno looking to rest his regulars before the clash against Liverpool.

According to Nottingham defender Morato, ‘Nottingham are in the race. We are in this fight for the title because we deserve to be.’ The comparison to Leicester’s exceptional Premier League title in 2015-2016 isn’t surprising. They claimed the same number of points as Forest —40 in 20 matches.

Liverpool

Liverpool are at the top of the league—with only one defeat in 19 matches, the lowest in the league. Coach Arne Slot commented about the history of the two teams, with a rivalry dating back to the 1970s and 80s.

Nottingham are the only team to defeat Liverpool in the Premier League this season, back in September. Although Slot described Nuno’s job as “incredible”, he also pointed out that if you look at “the amount of money they’ve spent, it’s not a complete surprise how well they’re doing this season”.

Just like Forest, Liverpool progressed through the next stage of the FA Cup in a 4-0 win against Accrington. Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa scored. They’ve been paired with Plymouth for the next round of the competition, scheduled for February 8th.

According to Arne Slot, Joe Gomez remains “quite far away” from an injury return. Darwin Núñez is suspended.

Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool Prediction

  • Pick: Liverpool to win
  • Odds: -159 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Liverpool

Coach Arne Slot has made it clear that this match won’t be easy and expects “the atmosphere to be fired up from the start”. He added that it’ll be “a difficult challenge”, admitting they are “definitely capable” of competing for the Premier League title.

Without Núñez, the match will be more complicated since Liverpool will miss the box dominance of the Uruguayan. However, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz are expected to step up. Both teams have only conceded 19 goals in the Premier League, making them one of the best defensive teams (only Arsenal do better, conceding 18).

However, Liverpool’s offensive output, combined with a dynamic midfield should be enough to ensure a victory.

Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Mohamed Salah to score
  • Odds: +104 (20Bet)

In a match like this, where both coaches talk about a difficult fixture, the expectations will be set high for Mohamed Salah. With 18 goals, he is the league’s top scorer, two ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. He dribbles past most defenders and often lands in shooting positions.

The stats speak for themselves: he scores a goal every 88 minutes. If there’s one player Nottingham Forest will focus on stopping, it’s “The Egyptian King”
