Mexico vs Uruguay Preview and Team News

Mexico Team News

Mexico know that it won’t be easy competing against Uruguay, especially since the latter’s defense is known to be quite strong. Gilberto Mora is a doubtful starter for the home team due to a hand injury, but everyone else is fit and available.

Mexico come here on the back of a 1-1 draw with Ecuador. Although they had 54% possession, they couldn’t convert this into a match-winning performance. In the final third, they took only 13 feeble attempts on goal, four of which were on target and three were big chances.

Even though their players showcased a lot of precision in their passing and ended the evening with an accuracy of 83%, they weren’t able to mark their opponents closely and allowed them to run away scot-free. Mexico also made 23 tackles and 12 interceptions.

Mexico predicted lineup vs Uruguay (4-3-3): Rangel; Chavez, Vasquez, Montes, Reyes; Romo, Lira, Sanchez; Quinones, Berterame, Lozano.

Uruguay Team News

Uruguay are currently ranked 15th by FIFA, just one spot below their opponents. Historically, they’re known for being extremely expressive in the final third and compact at the back. Uruguay don’t have any major absentees apart from Darwin Nunez and will be able to select their best possible XI.

They’ve been undefeated in their last five games, which should give them the confidence to take on Mexico. In their recent 2-1 win over Uzbekistan, striker Federico Vinas put up a contrasting show at the top. He had the fewest touches (31) of any outfield player to play 90 minutes. Still, Vinas posted a passing accuracy of 94% and ended the evening with a couple of assists to his name.

Attacking midfielder Facundo Torres, who scored a goal, was the most fouled player (three times). And yet, he had a successful dribbling rate of 100% and confounded his markers with his movements.

Uruguay predicted lineup vs Uzbekistan (4-1-4-1): Israel; Saracchi, Marichal, Bueno, Rodriguez; Martinez; Sanabria, Torres, Zalazar, Amaro; Vinas.

Mexico vs Uruguay Prediction

  • Pick: Uruguay to win or draw
  • Odds: -385 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Mexico 1-2 Uruguay

We expect Uruguay to either win or draw. Their attackers are known to put numbers behind the ball and push their opponents out of their comfort zones. The visitors exploit wide spaces effectively, and their 4-1-4-1 formation allows them to do that without losing shape.

At the back, Uruguay are very compact, and their defenders are in good form, having kept four clean sheets in five matches. Mexico, lined up in their 4-3-3 formation, like to use crosses, but this might be challenging against Uruguay’s man-marking tactics.

Mexico vs Uruguay Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Total over 1.5 goals
  • Odds: -233 (20Bet)

A total of over 1.5 goals, which means at least two goals, is expected in the match. While Uruguay may be a tad slow to get off the mark without the services of former Liverpool star Nunez, Mexico have enough attackers in their ranks.

The hosts like to use a combination of vertical pressing and wing-based play, and the visitors will need to remain on top of their defensive game at all times. Mexico can also operate on the overlap, which gives them extra time on the ball, especially in 1v1 situations.
