Manchester United vs West Ham United Preview and Team News

Manchester United Team News

Manchester United take on West Ham United in the 36th round of the Premier League on Sunday. The Red Devils, who are flailing in the league this season, have seemed shadows of their former selves. Their 3-4-2-1 formation is not quite working in England, but new head coach Ruben Amorim is adamant that he will not change his ways.

Although he was brought in midway through the season from Sporting, the Portuguese coach has struggled to get his tactics through to the players. However, things seem to be on the uptick for Man United currently, especially with their performances in the UEFA Europa League

On Thursday, they secured a place in the final after beating Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate. In the final, they will meet with another struggling team in the Premier League: Tottenham Hotspur

Against West Ham, Amorim will have to make do without the presence of several key players such as Diogo Dalot and Matthijs de Ligt. The likes of Lisandro Martínez and Joshua Zirkzee have already been ruled out for the rest of the season, whereas Toby Collyer and Ayden Heaven seem to be doubtful starters.

United have shown that they can do well on the counter-attack, with players such as Amad Diallo and Mason Mount proving their points with the pace they bring both with and without the ball. West Ham’s defenders can usually get overwhelmed when their opponents try to play through the line, and United will look to do so, especially in this encounter.

No matter how well Bruno Fernandes plays and the number of chances he creates in the attacking third, United have failed to latch onto them at regular intervals. While they did well to come from behind in their previous Premier League outing, a 3-4 loss to Brentford, United have a long way to go before they can compete alongside their traditional rivals, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs West Ham United (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, Lindelöf, Maguire; Dorgu, Casemiro, Eriksen, Mazraoui; Fernandes, Garnacho; Højlund.

West Ham United Team News

West Ham United, who are ranked just two spots below Manchester United in the league table (17th), know that life can get tricky if you start dropping points on a regular basis. Still, they know that they are safe from relegation this season and can start working on their plans for the next campaign.

West Ham like to operate with a 3-4-2-1 formation, quite similar to the one used by their opponents. However, they like to play with a high line, which often gets in the way of their plans to catch their opponents short.

A tight zonal marking system is critical for a high line to be effective, and although the Hammers promise a lot at the start of their games, these taper off as soon as the second half whistle gets blown.

In this game, they cannot afford to let their guard down and allow the Manchester attackers, especially the likes of Garnacho and Diallo (who might come off the bench), to get behind their own defenders.

Crysencio Summerville, Edson Álvarez and Michail Antonio will not be available for selection in this game, with the latter being sorely missed for his attacking prowess. One of the biggest events to look forward to in this game will be the return of former Manchester United fullback Aaron Wan-Bissaka, this time wearing West Ham’s colours, to his former haunting ground of Old Trafford.

West Ham United predicted lineup vs Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Emerson; Soucek, Rodríguez; Bowen, Paqueta, Kudus; Füllkrug.

Manchester United vs West Ham United Prediction

  • Pick: Manchester United to win or draw
  • Odds: -357 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: Manchester United 2-1 West Ham United

Manchester United and West Ham United have not drawn any of their last 12 matches against each other – this is a telling statistic that proves that we might be headed towards a result in this game as well.

Nonetheless, we expect Manchester United to either win or draw this game and impose their supremacy over their opponents, especially since they are playing at home. West Ham United haven’t won a match in 8 attempts, having lost two out of their last five as well.

We do not think Graham Potter’s side will be the one favoured in picking up three points in this game. This game is firmly tilted towards the side of Manchester United, or in the worst case, a draw. The home team also haven’t won in their last three Premier League outings, but this one should change that tally.

Manchester United vs West Ham United Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: -145 (20Bet)

Jarrod Bowen, who has scored ten goals and provided seven assists in the 31 matches he has played so far this season, will be the main player to watch out for in the West Ham outfit. For Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes, as always, will pose the biggest threat.

The Portuguese attacking midfielder has been vital for the Red Devils from the time he signed for them in January 2020, and he has helped them out with 17 goal contributions this season. With such brilliant attacking prospects in store, we expect both teams to get on the scoresheet (BTTS) in this game.
