After being beaten 0-1 by Arsenal in their opening Premier League fixture and following it up with a 1-1 draw with Fulham in their next, the Red Devils were then sent packing from the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town of all teams on Wednesday evening.

Head coach Ruben Amorim, who was appointed midway through the 2024-25 season and widely appreciated for his three-man backline, has failed to provide the solutions that Man United’s supporters have sought for a long time, with the signings of top stars Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha failing to stop the rot. 

In the game against Burnley, the club will play more for pride than anything else. Fortunately for Amorim, he has just two injuries to deal with in his squad: Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui. He has enough options to choose from in defense, while looking to go with Sesko and Mason Mount in attack from the bench.

Ahead of this massive fixture against United, the Clarets have several injured players in their ranks. Armando Broja, Axel Tuanzebe, Bashir Humphreys, Connor Roberts, Jordan Beyer, and Zeki Amdouni have all been sidelined.

Burnley need to improve their returns in the attacking third, having scored only four goals in their last five matches. Against Sunderland, they relied heavily on counterattacks and held only 42% possession. Their expected goals (xG) in that game stood at 1. They took only seven shots, putting merely two of them on target. 

Even so, they’ll fancy themselves against United, given their opponents’ poor recent form, and aim to deal an even bigger blow to them.

Despite their inconsistent form in front of goal, Manchester United are expected to break the shackles in this encounter and finally get the new season of the Premier League underway with their first three points. Their forwards should be eager to seize the opportunity.

Amorim likes his attackers to make use of the space on the flanks and hasn’t been left disappointed so far. New signing Cunha has been among the best of his offensive players, even though Bruno Fernandes and Mbeumo have also shown glimpses of their potential. Sesko, meanwhile, will need to step up and deliver if he comes off the bench.

United’s three-man backline morphs into a back five without the ball, so Burnley will need to adjust accordingly.
