Liverpool vs Bournemouth Preview and Team News

Liverpool Team News

Arne Slot’s big-spending Liverpool kick off their title defense at Anfield against Bournemouth on Friday evening. Huge investments have been made this summer, with British-record signing Florian Wirtz, new fullbacks Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, and striker Hugo Ekitike among notable arrivals.

The fresh look didn’t deliver immediate rewards in the Community Shield, as Crystal Palace ultimately beat the Reds. Still, their attacking play was exciting, with the link-up between Wirtz and Ekitike standing out.

However, defensively, there are issues that Slot must address. Just like in preseason, Liverpool were vulnerable on counterattacks, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate caught out on a number of occasions. Frimpong, despite being an attacking threat, also showed the same defensive weaknesses as his predecessor.

That became evident in the second half, as he played Sarr onside for Palace’s equalizer. However, Slot described these defensive lapses as teething problems, and a more resolute performance should be expected when the season kicks off properly against Bournemouth.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Bournemouth (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez; Jones, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Bournemouth Team News

In 2025-26, Andoni Iraola will be aiming to build on the solid Premier League campaign they had last season. However, the coach has had to oversee a period of change, with first-team regulars Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez departing the club.

It’s also likely that Bournemouth will be without Illya Zabarnyi by Friday, as the defender is closing in on a move to PSG. Drode Petrovic has been brought in from Chelsea to be the number one goalkeeper, while French left-back Adrien Truffert is a like-for-like replacement for Kerkez.

Iraola is expected to stick with the 4-2-3-1 system, which allows the Cherries to either play a possession-based game or hit on the counterattack, depending on the fixture. The latter approach seems more likely for this opening-night assignment, with David Brooks and Justin Kluivert providing support from the wide areas for Evanilson.

Bournemouth predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Smith, Senesi, Mepham, Truffert; Adams, Scott; Kluivert, Brooks, Tavernier; Evanilson.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth Prediction

  • Pick: Liverpool to win
  • Odds: -333 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth

Despite defensive issues at Wembley last Sunday, a home win appears to be the standout prediction for Friday. Slot’s side have been impressive in the final third, and Ekitike could quickly become one of the most exciting players to watch. His ability to drop into wide areas to allow Wirtz and Gakpo to move centrally caused significant issues for Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

While Bournemouth are likely to get chances in the final third, Liverpool boast a wealth of riches in offensive areas, and the sheer number of chances that they’re expected to create should help them score enough times to get off to a winning start in their title defense.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both Teams to Score
  • Odds: -143 (20Bet)

The clubs’ last three head-to-head meetings have seen only one side find the back of the net, but that streak could end on Friday.

While Liverpool’s attacking threat is undeniable, it was challenging not to be alarmed by their poor defensive display at Wembley last week. Bournemouth have an excellent counterattacking style of play and will likely find success on the transitions against a rival that tends to play a high line.

Creative players such as Kluivert and Brooks are capable of delivering the crucial passes in the final third, so we could see the visitors scoring at least once at Anfield.
