Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid Preview and Team News

Liverpool Team News

After a record-breaking summer spending spree, Liverpool have made the perfect start to the 2025/26 season, winning all four matches so far. They’ve needed to work for those victories, with the Reds taking the lead in the 80th minute or later on each occasion. Still, they’ve already shown why they are serious contenders in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Their first European fixture comes just three days after a 1-0 win at Burnley, which came courtesy of a 95th-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah. They were dominant throughout, registering 27 attempts and generating 2.65 xG, while the newly-promoted side failed to hit the target with any of their three shots.

Arne Slot’s team are evolving all the time. Ryan Gravenberch has been key to their bright start, impressing again at Turf Moor with his ability to withstand the press and excel in tight spaces.

Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai’s move to right-back has added a new dynamic to their play. The Hungarian fired six shots at the weekend, having already scored a screamer in the key 1-0 victory over Arsenal just before the international break.

Injuries to Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister may see Szoboszlai revert to his more familiar midfield role here. Deadline-day signing Alexander Isak should make the squad for the first time on Wednesday, but he won’t be ready to start.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Atlético Madrid (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Konaté, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Atlético Madrid Team News

It’s been a much less encouraging opening month for Atlético Madrid. They went into the international break having failed to win any of their first three La Liga fixtures. They did respond with a much-needed 2-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday.

New signing Nico González added some more attacking spark and scored on his debut with an excellent header. It was another performance that fell short of expectations, though. The Yellow Submarine generated marginally more xG, with Atleti only registering eight attempts across the 90 minutes.

Diego Simeone recalled the experienced duo of Koke and Antoine Griezmann, and both played the full game. That may have helped them negotiate the mental side of closing out their first victory of the season. However, with the likes of Álex Baena and Thiago Almada out injured, they aren’t providing enough service for Julián Alvarez up top.

Those two players will miss out again on Merseyside, while Alvarez is a fitness doubt with a knee issue. Los Rojiblancos also have problems at the back. José María Giménez and David Hancko are expected to be sidelined, but they’re more optimistic about Robin Le Normand, who has been dealing with a thigh injury.

Atlético Madrid predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-4-2): Oblak; Ruggeri, Lenglet, Le Normand, Llorente; González, Gallagher, Barrios, Simeone; Griezmann, Sørloth.

Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid Prediction

  • Pick: Liverpool to win
  • Odds: -167 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Atlético Madrid

The Spaniards famously won at Anfield to knock Liverpool out of the 2019/20 Champions League, but a repeat of that performance looks unlikely this week. While they’re still growing as a unit after a busy summer, Slot’s side have no obvious weaknesses. His squad are now full of players suited to executing his high-energy style, which focuses on the need for quick transitions.

By contrast, Simeone’s plan to take Atlético Madrid to the next level has been hampered by injuries to several of his summer signings. Baena has been a huge miss, as he’s the player most capable of filling that creative void and linking the midfield and attack.

Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Liverpool to win to nil
  • Odds: +190 (20Bet)

Away from home in Europe, we rarely see Simeone take many risks. He’s likely to utilize a low block here and set up with two rigid lines of four out of possession, with little space in between them.

That suggests this fixture may follow the trend of Liverpool’s last two games, which have both seen the Merseysiders have much of the play against cautiously-minded opponents. They only gave up 0.62 xG in total across those encounters, and the hosts look capable of shutting out misfiring Atleti.
