Italy vs Norway Preview and Team News

Italy Team News

Italy know that taking on Norway won’t be easy, and that they’ll need to be tight at the back at all times. They’ve been dealt a big blow by the absence of fullback Riccardo Calafiori, who is a doubtful starter due to a knock. Manager Gennaro Gattuso usually prefers to build play from the back.

The Azzurri, currently ranked ninth by FIFA, are aiming to make it to the World Cup after missing the previous two editions. To do that, they’ll need to overcome every challenge sent their way by the Norwegian attackers.

Italy have won their last five games in a row, most recently defeating Moldova. They kept 77% of the ball in their 2-0 victory and ended the evening with an extremely impressive xG of 2.60. Their passing accuracy was also quite high at 89%, and they committed five fewer fouls than their opponents. The team’s unusual 4-1-2-3 formation is likely to throw Norway off their scent and give them more time to put numbers behind the ball.

Italy predicted lineup vs Norway (4-1-2-3): Vicario; Cambiaso, Buongiorno, Mancini, Bellanova; Cristante; Raspadori, Tonali; Zaccagni, Scamacca, Orsolini.

Norway Team News

Norway can pose a significant threat to Italy, even though the latter’s defenders are historically known to play compact.

With striker Erling Haaland in prime form for both club (Manchester City) and country, the visitors will rely on him to create opportunities in the final third. Haaland is one of the best strikers in the world at the moment and can be trusted to convert chances into goals. His incisive nature and positioning off the ball make him a big threat.

Norway’s midfielders will need to be sharp in picking up loose balls and sending weighted passes to Haaland inside the box if they are to surprise Italy. The Scandinavian side have gone unbeaten in 13 matches, and this run should be enough to give them a big boost in confidence. Their defenders, however, will be hungry for a clean sheet, as they’ve kept just one in their last four attempts.

In their recent 4-1 win over Estonia, strikers Haaland and Alexander Sorloth bagged a brace each, warming up nicely for the challenge ahead. The latter posted a passing accuracy of 87% and ended the evening with an xG of 0.93. Norway are currently on top of their group table with 21 points, while Italy are second with 18.

Norway predicted lineup vs Italy (4-4-2): Nyland; Moller Wolfe, Heggem, Ajer, Ryerson; Nusa, Berg, Berge, Bobb; Haaland, Sorloth.

Italy vs Norway Prediction

  • Pick: Italy to win
  • Odds: -119 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Italy 2-1 Norway

We expect Italy to win. Apart from Haaland and Sorloth, Norway don’t pose many challenges, and the hosts should be able to handle them comfortably. Buoyed by their thousands of supporters at home, the Azzurri will look to push their opponents out of their comfort zone. Italy’s short passing routine, aided by the accuracy of their crosses, makes them quite hard to deal with.

The home team are also very sharp in defense and give their opponents very little space to operate. Norway will need to take advantage of whatever gaps they can find in midfield to create goalscoring opportunities and hope that Haaland is at the top of his game.

Italy vs Norway Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Total over two goals
  • Odds: -238 (20Bet)

With top attacking talent on both squads, it’s only natural to expect more than two goals. Italy’s precision in passing and crossing makes them a dangerous side at all times, whereas Norway rely almost entirely on Sorloth and Haaland’s precision inside the box.

Haaland, nonetheless, depends heavily on good passes and through balls, and if the visitors can provide him with that, things could get quite interesting. However, Italy mark their opponents closely right from midfield, where at least one of their players (Sandro Tonali) operates in a box-to-box role. This will be a good challenge for the Azzurri to see if they can prevent Haaland from controlling the outcome.
