Ireland vs Portugal Preview and Team News

Ireland Team News

The Republic of Ireland are still in contention for a playoff place as they bid to reach the 2026 World Cup. However, they may need to cause a major upset in this game to keep those hopes alive.

Since his appointment in 2024, Heimir Hallgrímsson has struggled to revive the fortunes of this Irish side. A 2-1 defeat in Armenia in September was a major low point, a result that all but ended their chances of winning Group F. October brought a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture against the Armenians, with a 1-0 defeat in Portugal sandwiched in between.

The Boys in Green held firm for 91 minutes in that match, until Ruben Neves’ stoppage-time goal, although they were hanging on for virtually the entire contest. The Iberians had 30 attempts in total, while the visitors created under 0.1 xG. They found it impossible to launch any meaningful breaks, with Evan Ferguson an isolated figure up top.

In Dublin this time around, the home fans will want to see more attacking intent. That won’t be easy, given the hosts are hampered by suspensions for Jayson Molumby and Ryan Manning, while Ferguson and Mark Sykes have been forced to withdraw from the squad with injuries.

Ireland predicted lineup vs Portugal (3-4-2-1): Kelleher; O’Shea, Collins, O’Brien; Scales, Cullen, Taylor, Coleman; Ebosele, Azaz; Idah.

Portugal Team News

Portugal will qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they win this game. However, they have the safety net of a final home fixture against Armenia should anything go badly wrong in the Irish capital.

Roberto Martínez’s side were not clinical during the most recent international break. They failed to make Ireland pay, with even Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty when these teams last met. Some complacency also appeared to creep in as they only drew 2-2 against Hungary last time out.

Much of the action in that encounter came on the Portuguese left. Fullback Nuno Mendes was again influential going forward, creating one goal and completing four key passes across the 90 minutes. However, the Magyars did have plenty of attacking joy on that half of the pitch too, with their opponents frequently leaving space they managed to exploit.

The visitors will have to cope without the influential Bruno Fernandes in this game due to suspension. Mendes is also a notable injury absentee. No players have pulled out of the initial squad, so Portugal should be close to full strength aside from that.

Portugal predicted lineup vs Ireland (4-2-3-1): Costa; Cancelo, Veiga, Dias, Semedo; Vitinha, R. Neves; Neto, Silva, Trincão; Ronaldo.

Ireland vs Portugal Prediction

  • Pick: Portugal to win
  • Odds: -278 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Ireland 1-2 Portugal

There was virtually no attacking ambition whatsoever from Ireland when these nations met earlier in the group. Injuries will make it difficult for Hallgrímsson’s side here too, but there were some obvious cracks in the Portuguese defense against Hungary, and those will offer hope to the hosts.

João Cancelo is likely to come into the visiting lineup, and he’s another attack-minded fullback who can be vulnerable positionally, while also being prone to reckless challenges. That may be one potential weakness in the away camp, but the gulf in class between these countries is significant, and a road win looks by far the most likely outcome.

Ireland vs Portugal Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Portugal to score 2-3 goals
  • Odds: -118 (20Bet)

Hampered by a lack of technical quality, it’s only natural that Hallgrímsson has adopted a conservative approach to most fixtures. That won’t be any different here, and his 3-4-2-1 structure can take the shape of a much more defensive 5-4-1 when they don’t have the ball.

That structure has contributed to Ireland only conceding eight goals in eight matches in 2025. They’re relatively strong in central defense and have a very capable goalkeeper in Caoimhín Kelleher. That suggests they should be able to avoid a heavy defeat, but Portugal did create 3.11 xG against this opposition in October and are unlikely to be as wasteful again.
