The first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal between Inter Milan and Barcelona ended in a spectacular 3-3 stalemate. However, the second game will be the more decisive one, with both teams gearing up for the showdown on Tuesday. 

Inter, playing at home, will hope that their supporters turn up in large numbers to boost their morale. Their attacking unit, as visualised by manager Simone Inzaghi, has been in fine nick this season. Attacker Lautaro Martinez, who is their second-highest goalscorer in the Serie A, is a doubtful starter in this game owing to a muscle injury, while Benjamin Pavard has been ruled out with a knee injury until later this month. On the other hand, Valentin Carboni has picked up an ACL tear and has been sidelined for the rest of the season.

This tactic, combined with their strong zonal marking system, makes them a difficult team to get past. However, they will learn from the mistakes of conceding three goals in the first leg and get back on their feet as quickly as possible. Inter will also gain a lot of confidence from the 1-0 win they had over Hellas Verona in the Serie A over the weekend. 

Former Manchester United and Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who now operates in the centre of the park for Inter, will be the one to watch out for when he has the ball, while Nicolo Barella, his teammate, will be tasked with cleaning up alongside the three central defenders.

However, manager Hansi Flick will be wary of complacency creeping into his team, and will push them into making good decisions in the attacking third in order to book a spot in the final.

Striker Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to return in this game after having earlier been ruled out with a hamstring injury, can single-handedly change the game in his team’s favour. This will give Barca a huge boost since he is their leading goalscorer in La Liga, and also the overall top scorer of the competition.

However, this will also give a chance to the youngsters in the Barca squad, including prodigy Lamine Yamal, to showcase their potential. 

Along with Lewandowski, Barca will be without the services of Alejandro Balde, Jules Koundé, Marc Bernal, Daniel Rodriguez and Marc Casado for this game due to injuries.

Barca, as always, will push their fullbacks to bomb forward and deliver dangerous crosses into the box, but Inter’s three-man defence may prove to be somewhat of a deterrent. Moreover, Koundé’s absence at left-back will affect them – he picked up a foot injury in the first leg and is expected to be out for at least three weeks.

Nonetheless, Flick’s men can be quick enough to resort to a short and quick passing tactic in which they evade their opponents by taking less time on the ball but finding their teammates at the right time.

Mehdi Taremi will most likely play alongside him in attack. 

For Barca, Lamal, Raphinha and Ferran Torres will play crucial roles in the attacking third and hope to make up for the absence of Lewandowski. Flick is the more attack-minded of the two managers on display in this game, but with the final up for grabs, even Inzaghi will urge his players to be more aggressive and attack, at least when Barca lose the ball and are vulnerable on the counter.
