Germany vs Luxembourg Preview and Team News

Germany Team News

Germany and head coach Julian Nagelsmann come into this match with little to gain but everything to lose. Failure to win could cost them the top spot in Group A of World Cup qualifying. That’s an almost unthinkable scenario for Die Mannschaft, who are in need of a positive performance as well as the right result here.

The four-time champions have made it to every World Cup they’ve entered, but a 2-0 defeat in Slovakia in September leaves them in a bit of trouble in this campaign. They had 70% of the ball in that contest, but lacked a cutting edge.

Serge Gnabry and Nick Woltemade struggled to make an impact, while Florian Wirtz was the only player to sustain a threat and pick passes to open up a compact opposing backline.

Nagelsmann’s men did respond with an important 3-1 comeback victory over Northern Ireland a few days later. The group favorites were comfortably the better side in that game, and that should be the case again here against outsiders Luxembourg.

There are some notable injury absentees, with Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Antonio Rüdiger, and Marc-André ter Stegen all currently out.

Germany predicted lineup vs Luxembourg (4-2-3-1): Baumann; Raum, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Anton; Kimmich, Goretzka; Leweling, Wirtz, Gnabry; Woltemade.

Luxembourg Team News

It’s always a challenge for Luxembourg to compete with the bigger nations in Europe, but they’ve developed into a more competitive international outfit in recent years. The Red Lions upset Sweden in a friendly earlier this year, but were beaten in their opening two World Cup qualifiers in September.

They must have been disappointed by their showing in a 3-1 home defeat against Northern Ireland. However, they were excellent in their subsequent match against Slovakia, generating more xG and taking more shots than their opponents in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

20-year-old Aiman Dardari shone on the left flank in that contest, with three key passes, while right winger Danel Sinani also hit the woodwork. Those two Bundesliga players will be hoping to test the German full-backs on Friday.

Jeff Strasser’s initial squad hasn’t been hit by any injury withdrawals. He’s unlikely to change too much after such a strong performance.

Luxembourg predicted lineup vs Germany (4-2-3-1): Moris; Bohnert, Carlson, Mahmutović, Jans; Martins, Barreiro; Dardari, Olesen, Sinani; Muratović.

Germany vs Luxembourg Prediction

  • Pick: Germany to win
  • Odds: -2000 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Germany 2-0 Luxembourg

On the evidence of how these two teams played against Slovakia last month, the outcome of this match isn’t a mere formality. However, even with their current flaws, Germany’s extra quality should show over the course of 90 minutes. They ought to have enough variety in their game to break through at least twice.

Even with a number of their other stars either missing or out of form, they can still count on captain Joshua Kimmich to get on the ball and exert some control from midfield.

Their attacking play may be lacking fluidity at the moment, but the aerial threat of Woltemade also gives them a useful target man to play off, should the visitors drop deep and look to play for a point.

Germany vs Luxembourg Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Under 3.5 goals
  • Odds: -122 (20Bet)

Luxembourg can no longer be considered one of the outright minnows of European football. They have a number of players who operate in major leagues and haven’t conceded more than three goals in any of their last 20 internationals.

The performance in their last fixture, which was only their second since Strasser’s appointment as the new coach, was good enough to suggest they can at least keep the score down here.

With Musiala out, Wirtz will be expected to provide the chief creative threat for the hosts, but he’s clearly low on confidence right now, after a slow start to his Liverpool career. That suggests this may be another awkward evening for Germany, and we may not get many goals.
