France vs Ukraine Preview and Team News

France Team News

It wasn’t a particularly convincing October international break for France. They saw off Azerbaijan 3-0 as expected, but for the second time in World Cup qualifying Group D, they struggled against unfancied Iceland, this time drawing 2-2. They do remain on course to reach the big tournament next summer and will seal their place if they win this Thursday.

Considering the quality they have in their ranks, anything short of direct passage to the 2026 World Cup would be a disaster for Les Bleus. They dominated the play in their last match, completing 91% of their passes. However, with Kylian Mbappé sidelined, they at times lacked cutting edge, converting only 10% of their attempts.

The Real Madrid striker is back to captain his country this week. He’s likely to spearhead a 4-2-3-1 system, although Didier Deschamps did use his star forward alongside Hugo Ekitike in a front two earlier in the campaign. The home boss is missing the injured trio of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, and Aurélien Tchouaméni.

France predicted lineup vs Ukraine (4-2-3-1): Maignan; T. Hernandez, Upamecano, Saliba, Koundé; Koné, Camavinga; Nkunku, Olise, Barcola; Mbappé.

Ukraine Team News

Ukraine made a poor start to this group, marked by a 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan in September. However, they bounced back and won their two October encounters. They avenged their defeat against Azerbaijan with a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture, while they were 5-3 winners in a dramatic game in Iceland

Serhiy Rebrov switched to a 4-1-4-1 system in those two matches, and the change certainly had a positive impact on their results. They looked to move the ball forward quickly in Reykjavik, with Ruslan Malinovskyi making bursts into the final third to support lone striker Vladyslav Vanat. They were clinical in that contest and massively outperformed their xG total of 1.0.

The Blue and Yellow will most likely be happy to cede possession to their opponents on Thursday night, with a similar structure expected. Oleksandr Zinchenko is a major injury absentee, while Arseniy Batahov and Volodymyr Brazhko have also been forced to pull out of the squad due to fitness issues.

Ukraine predicted lineup vs France (4-1-4-1): Trubin; Mykolenko, Matviyenko, Zabarnyi, Konoplya; Kalyuzhnyi; Sudakov, Shaparenko, Malinovskyi, Tsyhankov; Vanat.

France vs Ukraine Prediction

  • Pick: France to win
  • Odds: -526 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: France 2-1 Ukraine

This French squad may be missing some important players, but they’re still blessed with an abundance of quality. In Mbappé and Michael Olise, they have two of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe. While the duo are still working on building their on-pitch chemistry, there’s always a sense that either could produce a moment of brilliance at any given moment.

The visitors are likely to drop a bit deeper than usual and try to play on the break. That approach could yield some success, but it’s hard to see a defense that has yet to keep a clean sheet in this group being able to contain Mbappé for 90 minutes.

The forward has adapted his game slightly this year, and he’s capable of both running beyond defenses, as well as operating as something more akin to a number 10 at times. That can make him harder to pick up and also means he’s capable of chipping in with assists.

France vs Ukraine Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: +136 (20Bet)

France have incredible depth in offensive positions, with Jean-Philippe Mateta starting and scoring in their last match. The 28-year-old is a useful option for Deschamps to have on the bench, should he decide he needs to get more crosses into the penalty area and operate in a slightly more direct fashion.

Les Bleus look almost certain to score, but Ukraine should offer a threat too. They are strong on the flanks, and given that they really need to win this fixture to stand any chance of topping the group, full-backs Vitaliy Mykolenko and Yukhym Konoplya ought to be given license to push forward. The visitors may seek to target home right-back Jules Koundé, who is having a poor season at club level.
