France vs England Preview and Team News

France Team News

The World Cup third-place playoff is the match that nobody wants to play, least of all a French side that looked on course for glory. After six straight victories, they were clear favorites to win the competition. However, a lacklustre display against Spain ended their dream in the semifinals.

Having excelled in transitions and got great service to the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé against Morocco in the quarterfinal, they were ineffective in all departments against La Roja. The reigning European champions comfortably won the midfield battle, while an error from Lucas Digne led to an early penalty as Les Bleus succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

Didier Deschamps must now try to pick his team up and go again in Miami. He’s likely to hand opportunities to a few of his squad players. Regular centre-back William Saliba is a major injury doubt after limping off in the semifinal.

France predicted lineup vs England (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Hernandez, Lacroix, Upamecano, Gusto; Zaïre-Emery, Koné; Doué, Cherki, Dembélé; Mbappé.

England Team News

A second-half collapse cost England in their World Cup semifinal against Argentina. Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute goal put the Three Lions on course for their first final in 60 years. However, they quickly dropped into a low block, which proved completely ineffective against Lionel Messi, who inspired a 2-1 comeback victory for the South Americans.

Tuchel will be hoping his side can bounce back, but it won’t be easy just 72 hours on from such a great disappointment. The German coach will almost certainly opt for changes in wide areas, with Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka capable of offering fresh legs.

Jordan Henderson remains sidelined after fracturing his wrist during the celebrations that followed England’s 3-2 round-of-16 win against Mexico. Reece James is also a fitness doubt, but Jarell Quansah is available again following suspension and could start at right-back.

England predicted lineup vs France (4-2-3-1): Pickford; O’Reilly, Guéhi, Konsa, Quansah; Mainoo, Anderson; Rashford, Bellingham, Saka; Kane.

France vs England Prediction

  • Pick: France to win
  • Odds: -109 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: France 2-0 England

France have a clear advantage, as they’ve had 24 hours extra to get over their semifinal disappointment and prepare for this game. England will barely have time to settle back into their Kansas City base before traveling to Miami.

The Three Lions struggled to impose themselves in midfield or press effectively in hot conditions in this stadium only last weekend against Norway. Another afternoon kick-off could lead to similar problems for Tuchel’s team this Saturday.

Les Bleus have real depth in attacking areas, which will allow Deschamps to rotate in some positions without necessarily weakening them. Meanwhile, Mbappé, who has registered eight goals in seven appearances at this World Cup, is still in Golden Boot contention and therefore won’t be lacking motivation.

France vs England Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: England to score under 0.5 goals
  • Odds: +245 (20Bet)

England have struggled to get Kane into the game in the last two matches. He only recorded one shot against Argentina, and has made limited creative contributions at this tournament. The 32-year-old may also be struggling with fatigue, having barely missed a minute in North America this summer.

That will limit England’s offensive threat, given 86% of their goals at this competition have been scored by Kane or Jude Bellingham. Tuchel’s side only managed five attempts in total in the last round and won’t find it any easier against a solid French defense that has kept a clean sheet in four of their seven World Cup fixtures.
