England vs Serbia Preview and Team News

England Team News

After the pragmatism of the Southgate era, which ended after Euro 2024, Thomas Tuchel has implemented a more direct, possession-based system. The results are excellent: six straight qualifying wins, including a 5-0 result in Serbia and a 5-0 victory over Latvia in October.

The key to England’s transformation lies in the reinvention of their midfield. In the September clash against Serbia, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was the central star. Operating from the midfield, Anderson consistently broke lines with progressive passes, which is something England desperately needed. He completely controlled the tempo, rendering Serbia’s midfield duo of Saša Lukić and Nemanja Maksimović ineffective.

In recent matches, the Three Lions have built play patiently from the back, relying on their center-backs (Ezri Konsa and Marc Guéhi) to be comfortable on the ball against a passive press.

The 5-0 victory over Latvia was truly indicative in this regard: England’s right flank, where Bukayo Saka’s speed and Jed Spence’s overlapping runs stood out, created constant overload and chaos.

The biggest news for this camp is the return of superstars Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden, who both missed the September and October windows. This presents a wonderful selection headache for Tuchel. Should he reintegrate them into the lineup immediately, or should he reward the players who performed well in their 5-0 win, such as Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson?

New Bournemouth call-up Alex Scott provides further depth, though Adam Wharton remains sidelined with an injury

England predicted lineup vs Serbia (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Spence, Guehi, Stones, Lewis-Skelly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane.

Serbia Team News

For Serbia, currently sitting third in the group, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The team, now coached by Veljko Paunovic after a disappointing performance under Dragan Stojkovic, are in a tough battle for a playoff spot. This match is a crucial must-win for them, which creates a tense atmosphere and sets the stage for a dramatic encounter.

Serbia’s qualifying campaign has been somewhat shaky. Veljko Paunovic is unable to find consistent form, and the squad are leaking confidence.

Their last four outings illustrate their struggles: a narrow 1-0 win against Latvia, a disappointing 0-5 loss to England, a troubling 0-1 home defeat to Albania, and, most recently, a 3-1 victory over Andorra.

The 0-5 defeat to the Three Lions showed the tactical weaknesses in Serbia’s strategy. Dragan Stojković’s 3-4-3 formation was intended to be effective, but it quickly slipped into a passive 5-4-1 low block.

The English center-backs had plenty of space to operate, while Elliot Anderson faced little to no pressure. Serbia’s back three were left painfully exposed by England’s dynamic wingers. Their attack was predictable, relying on hopeful crosses, and their defensive transition was completely ineffective.

The 3-1 victory over Andorra did little to address the major questions surrounding the team. However, it did allow Serbia’s key strikers, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic, to get on the scoresheet. This striking partnership remains this side’s most important, if not only, strength. Mitrovic, the captain, is relied upon for his leadership and aerial skills, and Vlahovic brings a more dynamic attacking threat.

For this match, Serbia must find a way to disrupt England’s midfield build-up, likely by pressing Anderson and Rice more intensely.

This is a significant risk: if their press is bypassed, it could create dangerous spaces for players like Harry Kane, Bellingham, and Anthony Gordon. Key midfielders Saša Lukić and Lazar Samardžić, along with defensive anchor Strahinja Pavlović, will be crucial for any chance of an upset.

Serbia predicted lineup vs England (3-1-4-2): Petrovic; Erakovic, Veljkovic, Pavlovic; Gudelj; Nedeljkovic, Zivkovic, Ilic, Kostic; Vlahovic, Mitrovic.

England vs Serbia Prediction

  • Pick: England to win
  • Odds: -323 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: England 3-1 Serbia

Serbia’s must-win situation in this match is a trap. If they play defensively, they’ll be crushed, just like in September. If they attack, they’ll leave big gaps of space for Kane to drop into and for Saka and Gordon to exploit in fast attacks. The return of Jude Bellingham only adds another world-class, line-breaking threat to a team that already have many.

Serbia’s low confidence and the excellent quality of the opposition at Wembley are very difficult to overcome. Thus, I expect England to win comfortably.

England vs Serbia Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Total Over 2.5
  • Odds: -136 (20Bet)

England’s attacking play has been very strong, as they put five past the Balkan side in the reverse fixture.

Serbia’s defense was weak against a stronger opponent, and the need to score more goals will only create more space and opportunities for the Three Lions. Even if Tuchel opts to rotate, the incoming players (like Foden) will still bring world-class quality.

In their last 10 matches, England have averaged 3.0 goals per game, with seven of those encounters going over 2.5 goals. With Serbia forced to open up, this trend is likely to continue.
