Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Preview and Team News

Chelsea Team News

Enzo Maresca’s first league game this season at Stamford Bridge follows an eventful summer. Chelsea won the expanded Club World Cup, defeating PSG 3-0 in the final after overcoming Fluminense in the semifinal.

The mini-tournament, combined with a short 13-day preseason, placed a strong emphasis on conditioning and load management leading up to the season. The Blues finished their preseason on a high note, securing a 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen and then decisively beating Milan 4-1.

Maresca’s team alternate between a standard 4-2-3-1 formation and a high-pressing 4-4-2 when out of possession. Their most effective plays happen when the right-back pushes high early, Palmer drifts into the right half-space, and the central forward makes diagonal runs to exploit the space behind the opposing left-back. This strategy was particularly successful against PSG, with Palmer operating in a playmaker role and João Pedro adjusting his positioning to form a very effective partnership with Cole.

Chelsea’s summer transfer window was transformative, as they invested significant resources to reshape the squad. Among the biggest arrivals was João Pedro from Brighton for an initial £55 million plus add-ons.

The club also secured promising young talents such as Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, Jorrel Hato from Ajax, and Estevão Willian from Palmeiras. Additionally, several prospects were brought in, including Dário Essugo from Sporting CP and Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg.

Kendry Páez officially joined but was immediately loaned out, alongside Mike Penders and Marc Guiu. On the outgoing side, Chelsea generated significant revenue through the sales of Noni Madueke to Arsenal, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton, and the departures of Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Đorđe Petrović, and others.

The biggest blow to Chelsea’s early-season hopes is Levi Colwill’s season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 22-year-old was crucial to Maresca’s system last season, with his ball-playing ability from the left-sided center-back position central to their build-up play. His absence creates a gap in both tactics and personnel that won’t be easy to fill.

The fitness concerns regarding central defenders further complicate the situation. Wesley Fofana is still being eased back after his long-term injury layoff, while Trevoh Chalobah is expected to be fit after a minor pre-season knock. With Tosin Adarabioyo and young defender Jorrel Hato both available, Maresca faces the risk of starting an untested partnership on the opening day.

As we examine the situation further up the pitch, the futures of Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku remain uncertain after both players were excluded from key pre-season friendlies.

Their absence indicates a potential reshuffle in the forward line. As a result, there could be an opportunity for pre-season standout Liam Delap to take the lead in the attack.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs Crystal Palace (4-2-3-1): Sánchez; James, Fofana, Adarabioyo, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernández; Palmer, Gittens, Neto; Pedro.

Crystal Palace Team News

Crystal Palace start the new season with great confidence. Oliver Glasner has instilled remarkable belief in the squad, culminating in their first big trophies.

In recent matches, they celebrated a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final and secured a Community Shield win on penalties against Liverpool. Prior to that, their training camp in Austria finished with two games against Augsburg, resulting in a 3-1 win and a 1-0 defeat.

Earlier friendlies included a 3-0 victory at Crawley, two meetings with Mainz, which ended in a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 win on the same day, and a 1-0 victory in a training encounter against Millwall.

Oliver Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 formation is both cohesive and aggressive when out of possession. The front line presses in unison, while the wing-backs provide immediate width upon regaining the ball. Eberechi Eze moves fluidly from the left half-space into the center, with Jean-Philippe Mateta making explosive diagonal runs off the defender’s shoulder.

In their clash against Liverpool at Wembley, Crystal Palace demonstrated their ability to play in a deep defensive block before attacking the space behind the full-backs with quick diagonal passes and early crosses. This pattern could particularly trouble Chelsea.

This summer, Palace welcomed goalkeeper Walter Benítez on a free transfer from PSV, reinforced their left side with the £3-million arrival of Borna Sosa from Ajax, and brought academy talent Khyan Frazer-Williams into their youth ranks.

Departures included veterans like Joel Ward and Jeffrey Schlupp, who left after their contracts expired. Marc Guehi is also close to transferring to Liverpool.

The Eagles are dealing with a big injury list of their own. Midfielder Cheick Doucouré and Chadi Riad are both recovering from long-term knee injuries and won’t feature until later in the year.

More pressingly, new forward Eddie Nketiah is sidelined for what looks to be two months with a thigh injury, and Daichi Kamada is now a doubt for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace predicted lineup vs Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Lacroix, Guéhi, Richards; Muñoz, Hughes, Wharton, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Prediction

  • Pick: Chelsea or a draw
  • Odds: -626 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palac

Chelsea, coming off an incredibly successful end to their previous season and having confidently won their preseason matches, enter as clear favorites.

However, questions remain over how Enzo Maresca will cope with the loss of Levi Colwill in the upcoming outings. The absence of this key central defender and potential problems with defensive coordination could present big challenges for the London club and hinder their chances of winning.

Additionally, the visitors took points off the Blues in both meetings last season, with each game ending in a 1-1 draw. A narrow Chelsea victory or another stalemate seems to be the most likely outcome.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Cole Palmer to score
  • Odds: +138 (20Bet)

Cole Palmer has emerged as one of the main stars of the Club World Cup and deserves to be mentioned among the main contenders for the Ballon d’Or.

Although he endured a dip in form at the end of last season, his triumphant performance in the clash against PSG has undoubtedly boosted his confidence. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect him to score in the upcoming match.
