Chelsea vs Ajax Preview and Team News

Chelsea Team News

With attacker Joao Pedro suspended, Chelsea will have to look for other options on the bench to score goals against Ajax. Along with Pedro, the team have quite a few injured players in their ranks. Enzo Fernandez is a doubtful starter, while Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer, Dario Essugo, and Liam Delap have all been ruled out.

Manager Enzo Maresca likes his wards to operate with precision in the final third and encourages them to use as few touches as possible while passing the ball. The main attraction of Chelsea’s attacking moves is their fluidity, with most of their attackers being comfortable enough to play in any position across the front line.

With their off-the-ball play highly appreciated, the Blues defeated a struggling Nottingham Forest 3-0 in their most recent outing, extending their winning streak to three matches. This also includes a 2-1 win over defending Premier League champions Liverpool.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs Ajax (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Cucurella, Chalobah, Acheampong, James; Lavia, Gusto; Garnacho, Santos, Neto; Gittens.

Ajax Team News

Sitting 35th in the cumulative standings, Ajax have lost both matches they’ve played so far in the Champions League. Manager John Heitinga, much like during his playing days, prefers to be sharp in defense and doesn’t want to give his opponents much time on the ball to craft chances. However, that approach hasn’t produced the desired results yet.

Moreover, the absence of Owen Wijndal, Branco van den Boomen, and Kasper Dolberg will hamper Heitinga’s preparations, forcing him to turn to the reserves to bolster his XI.

What’s worse is that Ajax come here after being defeated 0-2 by AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie on Saturday.

Heitinga was surprised by the fact that his wards couldn’t inch ahead despite holding 61% possession and registering 17 shots, six of which were on target. Ajax also won 74% of all aerial and 59% of all ground duels, along with a successful dribbling rate of 65%, but this didn’t help them in the final third at all.

Ajax predicted lineup vs Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Jaros; Rosa, Baas, Sutalo, Gaaei; Taylor, Mokio; Godts, Gloukh, Edvardsen; Weghorst.

Chelsea vs Ajax Prediction

  • Pick: Chelsea to win
  • Odds: -385 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Ajax

Chelsea, despite Pedro’s absence, pose a significant threat in the final third. We expect them to win. Ajax have a relatively inexperienced defensive unit and could lose sight of the ball under the lights in such a high-pressure encounter away from home. The Blues are renowned for their quick passing, which can hold them in good stead while setting things up for attack.

Chelsea also play a lot of lobbed balls and crosses into the box, and these are bound to trouble the Ajax defenders. The visitors have already conceded 12 goals in their last five outings and don’t appear to be a cohesive unit with top-notch communication.

Chelsea vs Ajax Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Chelsea to score the first goal
  • Odds: -370 (20Bet)

Jamie Gittens is likely to start in place of Pedro as the lone Chelsea striker, and he might have a big role in converting passes into goals. We expect the hosts to score the first goal, thanks to their elaborate but precise passing routine. Ajax may need to play with a high defensive line and mark their opponents closely.

Moreover, since both these teams sport similar-looking 4-2-3-1 formations, there may not be much space in midfield, forcing Chelsea to rely on long balls. Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, and Gittens excel at receiving such passes and then troubling defenders with their footwork and agility.
