Burnley vs Liverpool Preview and Team News

Burnley Team News

With a return of three points from three fixtures so far, Burnley must be content with their start to life back in the Premier League, given that they’ve already traveled to Tottenham and Manchester United. Only a 97th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes denied them a point at Old Trafford in a 3-2 defeat last time out, while they beat Sunderland 2-0 at Turf Moor before that.

However, there are already some indicators that the Clarets could struggle. Their promotion was built on a superb defensive record — just 0.35 goals conceded per 90 minutes in the Championship. So far in the top flight, they’ve already let in six and allowed a league-high 6.6 xG. That suggests that their defensive resilience might not carry over to this level.

Personnel changes were always going to make that a tough challenge. Goalkeeper James Trafford moved to Manchester City in the summer, while defensive regular CJ Egan-Riley is now a Marseille player. With full-back Connor Roberts also dealing with an injury, Scott Parker has been forced to radically restructure the strongest part of his team.

Roberts remains a fitness doubt for this outing, while the hosts will once again be without long-term absentee Zeki Amdouni.

Burnley predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Dúbravka; Hartman, Esteve, Ekdal, Walker; Cullen, Ugochukwu; Anthony, Mejbri, Larsen; Foster.

Liverpool Team News

This will be Liverpool’s first game since the British-record signing of Alexander Isak, with their pursuit of the Swedish striker dominating the final few weeks of the transfer window. The defending champions were coping well enough without him, sitting atop the table after three straight Premier League victories to start the season.

The Reds needed winning goals in the 80th minute or later in all three of those fixtures. They were surprisingly overrun by 10-man Newcastle for long stretches on matchday two at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, a piece of individual brilliance from Dominik Szoboszlai was needed to settle a very tight encounter against a cautious Arsenal side last time out.

The Merseysiders do have plenty of players across the pitch who can produce those kinds of moments. However, Arne Slot will be keen for his team to start producing more fluent and more frequent attacking moves. While new forward Hugo Ekitike has slotted in nicely up front, Florian Wirtz has yet to find his best form.

There’s certainly room for improvement, but Slot isn’t expected to make many changes here. Isak isn’t match fit and might only feature off the bench. Jeremie Frimpong remains an injury concern, so Szoboszlai may start at right-back once more.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Burnley (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konaté, van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Gakpo, Wirtz, Salah; Ekitike.

Burnley vs Liverpool Prediction

  • Pick: Liverpool to win
  • Odds: -323 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Burnley 1-3 Liverpool

Liverpool haven’t hit top gear yet, and it may take a few more weeks before we start to get an idea of what their best lineup may be. Slot has so many options after a £446 million spending spree, and with few injuries, they’ll have a strong bench at Turf Moor on Sunday. That should help them find a goal if they once again need to strike late to net a winner.

However, it may not come to that. Burnley had to face 26 shots and conceded 3.63 xG against Man United last time out. The Clarets are no longer the well-drilled defensive unit that excelled in the Championship. They also lack the quality in midfield needed to compete against the defending champions.

Burnley vs Liverpool Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Liverpool to score over 2.5 goals
  • Odds: +112 (20Bet)

This should be the most comfortable afternoon of the season so far for the visitors. If they can score early to silence what will be an excitable crowd, we’re likely to see Liverpool settle into their rhythm with their strategic pressing game. That will make it very difficult for Burnley to even get out of their own half.

With the likes of Isak and talented teenager Rio Ngumoha on the bench, they should sustain an attacking threat across the full 90 minutes. Those two could be very dangerous if called upon against a tiring home defense, and the away team look capable of scoring at least three goals in this one.
