Brugge vs Barcelona Preview and Team News

Brugge Team News

Brugge have two key players sidelined with injuries: Ludovit Reis and Simon Mignolet. The team haven’t had the brightest of starts to this season’s UEFA Champions League and, as a result, sit 20th in the standings with three points. The Belgian club have won just one of the three matches they’ve played so far and haven’t shown much potential.

Against Barcelona, their defenders will be under pressure from the first minute, and how they handle that will determine their fate. If Brugge fail to pass the ball with accuracy, they’ll fall behind their opponents.

The squad come into this game on the back of three consecutive wins, with the most recent one being a 2-1 victory over FCV Dender EH. Brugge dominated proceedings all evening and registered 67% possession.

Their intention in the final third was to convert all the chances they created, which resulted in 1.39 xG. They took a total of 19 shots, five of which were on target. What impressed their supporters most was Brugge’s high passing accuracy of 90%. They also committed three fewer fouls than Dender.

Brugge predicted lineup vs Barcelona (4-3-3): Jackers; Seys, Mechele, Ordonez, Sabbe; Stankovic, Vanaken, Tresoldi; Tzolis, Vermant, Forbs.

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona, who have won two of their three Champions League matches so far, remain one of the best sides on display. They currently sit ninth in the table, but have their sights set on making it at least to the semifinals.

Manager Hansi Flick likes a fluid, flawless brand of passing that puts their opponents to shame. However, his squad has been hit hard by injuries, which could affect the overall quality on the pitch. Andreas Christensen, Gavi, Joan Garcia, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Pedri, and Raphinha have all been sidelined.

The team are coming off a 3-1 win over Elche, where attackers Lamine Yamal, Marcus Rashford, and Ferran Torres each scored a goal. Flick’s sole aim was to have his players press high after losing possession, and the same is expected to be on display against Brugge as well. Against Elche, Barça played a lot of one-touch passes, giving their opponents no time to regroup once they lost the ball.

Midfielders Frenkie de Jong, who posted a 90% passing accuracy, and Marc Casado set things up well. Although the latter lost the most duels (9), he, too, recorded a 90% pass completion rate and helped in breaking up play and setting up passes with his vision. Attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez, meanwhile, created the most chances (3).

Barcelona predicted lineup vs Brugge (4-2-3-1): Szczesny; Balde, E. Garcia, Araujo, Kounde; de Jong, Casado; Rashford, Lopez, Yamal; Torres.

Brugge vs Barcelona Prediction

  • Pick: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: -204 (20Bet)
  • Correct score prediction: Brugge 1-3 Barcelona

Barcelona are far ahead of their opponents in terms of quality and experience. Thus, we expect them to win. Although manager Flick will have to deal with injuries, he has enough players on the bench who can step up and dominate proceedings.

Brugge, meanwhile, lack the same level of experience and may falter at the first step. If they don’t defend well and allow the Barça attackers to roam freely on the flanks, it’ll be their first mistake.

The hosts will need to mark their opponents zonally and retain a high defensive line. They can’t allow Barça to breach their backline with through balls and overlaps.

Brugge vs Barcelona Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Barcelona to score the first goal
  • Odds: -222 (20Bet)

Barcelona like to start games on the front foot, setting the tempo with their fast-paced passing. Expect more of the same against Brugge, with the likes of Torres, Lopez, Rashford, and Yamal all complementing each other. The Spanish club tend to spread the ball to the flanks and send in crosses from there. Manager Flick also encourages his fullbacks to push high up the pitch, adding to their attacking firepower.

The Blaugrana are expected to score the first goal here, simply by overwhelming Brugge with their superior passing and crossing skills. Most importantly, with striker Robert Lewandowski providing accurate shooting inside the box (after coming off the bench), Barça should be on top at all times.
