Brentford vs Manchester City Preview

Brentford

Brentford currently rank 11th in the Premier League after collecting 27 points in 20 matches. Their victory against Southampton (5-0) marked their sole victory since defeating Newcastle 4-2 in early December.

The Bees were knocked out by Plymouth in a shocking 1-0 defeat this weekend, with Morgan Whittaker netting the decisive goal in the 82nd minute. Defeats to Arsenal (1-3) and Nottingham Forest (0-2) further highlight Brentford’s struggles against top-tier opponents.

Head coach Thomas Frank confirmed in the press conference preceding the match that Rico Henry will return to the squad after 16 months of absence. However, he is unlikely to feature against Manchester City.

Frank values his return and highlighted his importance, saying, ‘He’s been one of our best players during our four years in the Premier League. ‘ Christian Norgaard, Vitaly Janelt, and Ben Mee are expected to feature after missing the last match.

Manchester City

Currently 6th in the Premier League, Manchester City have accumulated 34 points from 20 matches. Unlike Brentford, they cruised into the next round of the FA Cup with a commanding 8-0 win over Salford. They’ve been paired for the next round with Leyton Orient and Derby, scheduled for February 8th.

Rumors suggest Kyle Walker is considering a move to AC Milan. He has expressed a desire to leave the club. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said that “he has to decide,” which likely rules him out of the Brentford clash.

Nonetheless, Pep Guardiola still praised the right back, saying,  “Kyle is an incredible player with an incredible physicality. He is a top-class player. When he has focus, he is unstoppable as a right-back.” Teammate Nathan Aké joined the praises, claiming the team would be “massively” impacted by his departure. He also mentioned that he’s “a big character in the squad.”

To compensate for his potential departure, Manchester City agreed to a 40M deal with French club Lens for Abdukodir Khusanov, making him the first Uzbek player to represent Manchester City. The Citizens are also linked with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush in an attempt to revamp the attack.

Ederson, Rúben Dias, John Stones, Rodri, Claudio Echeverri, and Oscar Bobb remain sidelined.

Brentford vs Manchester City Prediction

  • Pick: Manchester City to win
  • Odds: -161 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: Brentford 1-2 Manchester City

While Brentford often pose a challenge, they’re unlikely to overcome Manchester City.  Their defensive struggles are evident, having conceded 35 goals—just three fewer than they’ve scored.

Manchester City’s 8-0 victory against Salford will likely result in a more confident team, which is what the club has needed throughout the season. Young talents like John McAttee and seasoned veterans like Ilkay Gundogan delivered standout performances.

Furthermore, Savinho has improved in the last weeks, showing an enhanced attack in the final third.

Brentford vs Manchester City Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Erling Haaland to score
  • Odds: -141 (20Bet)

Norgaard has only just returned after missing the last game, so his sharpness is likely below its best—a concerning factor when facing Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, who scored 15 goals in 20 Premier League matches, rested during Manchester City’s 8-0 win and began the year with two goals against West Ham.

With Brentford conceding over one goal per match on average, Haaland seems poised to make an impact.
