Brazil vs Uruguay Preview

Brazil

Brazil continues to disappoint in the World Cup Qualifiers, with their latest disappointment coming in a 1-1 draw against Venezuela.

Although Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, Telasco Segovia levelled the score moments after coming on as a halftime substitute for Jhon Murillo.

Brazil couldn’t find the answer throughout the match despite Vinicius Jr.’s good attempt. The encounter ended with a red card for Venezuelan player Alexander González due to violent conduct only nine minutes after he came off the bench.

The Seleção needed a win to fight back for the podium places but instead remained fourth. With the pressure mounting, head coach Dorival Júnior must find a way to reignite the team’s firepower ahead of their clash with Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, who are two points ahead of them.

Brazil will be without Vanderon (suspended), while Alisson, Rodrygo, and Éder Militão remain injured. Igor Jesus, who didn’t have a great game against Venezuela, is still expected to lead Brazil’s attack.

Uruguay

Uruguay clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Colombia thanks to Manuel Ugarte’s decisive blow deep into stoppage time.

It seemed as if Colombia was going to escape with a draw when Andrés Gomez brought the score down to 2-2. However, Colombia’s inattention allowed Ugarte to score the winner in the final minutes.

This victory was important for Marcelo Bielsa’s team, who currently ranks second in the standings and are only three points behind Argentina.

This result comes as a major relief for La Celeste, who had endured a frustrating five-game winless streak prior to this fixture, including four draws and a surprising 1-0 defeat to Peru.

Bielsa’s signature pressing system struggled to yield goals during that period, but Uruguay’s win over Colombia keeps them firmly in the race. They sit second in the standings and just three points behind Argentina, which will be their next opponent after their clash with Brazil.

Brazil vs Uruguay Prediction

  • Pick: Uruguay to win
  • Odds: +459 (20Bet)
  • Score prediction: Brazil 0-1 Uruguay

While the Maracana would indicate a home advantage for Brazil, the Seleção have struggled in the last games against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay.

In their last encounter, the Uruguayans eliminated Brazil from the Copa America in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw in regular time. Uruguay also defeated Brazil in the World Cup Qualifiers in October 2023, as the Sky Blues outclassed Brazil (2-0) with goals from Darwin Nuñez and Nicolás de La Cruz.

Brazil needs the victory but will face a difficult opponent known for playing an intensive brand of soccer, commonly referred to as Bielsa-ball. It focuses on excessive physical demands, which forces players to run endlessly up and down the pitch.

Amid Brazil’s structural problems, Uruguay has a chance to inflict a defeat in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilians have struggled to find a brand of soccer that fits players who play in Europe and stars who have stayed in Brazil. The country once known for jogo bonito (the beautiful game) is unable to play its own brand of soccer.

This is the perfect scenario for the visitors, who have one clear style of soccer – physically intense. While Vinicius Jr struggles to replicate his Real Madrid form with the national team, Darwin Núñez never fails to perform in the Uruguayan jersey.

Brazil vs Uruguay Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Federico Valverde to score
  • Odds: +900 (20Bet)

Federico Valverde wasn’t involved in the attacking dynamics during the game against Colombia, but Bielsa may reconsider his role for the clash with Brazil. While it’s true that Carlo Ancelotti has deployed him in the deeper midfield since the retirement of Toni Kroos, Marcelo Bielsa has no reason to follow this route.

The Uruguayan maestro embodies the essence of a Bielsa player—high energy, tactical discipline, and the stamina to maintain relentless pressing throughout 90 minutes.

His late arrivals in the box would help overload the Brazilian defence and would potentially liberate Darwin Núñez from his marker. Valverde is an excellent shooter from range, which would force Brazil to prevent his movement in the box.
