Benfica

Benfica’s season in the Champions League comes with mixed results, as they’ve won three matches, drawn one, and lost two. Their last game in the competition ended in a 0-0 draw against Bologna, leaving the team 15th in the Champions League table.

Although enough to qualify for the next knockout round, they cannot afford to be complacent. The side is capable of better results, as evidenced by their 4-0 victory against Atlético de Madrid at the start of the season.

Benfica also enjoyed a 4-0 thrashing against Famalicao in the Portuguese League this weekend, inspired by Leandro Barreira’s hat trick. Orkun Kökçü scored the fourth goal with ten minutes to go. The victory was important for Benfica, as they lost their previous two encounters to Sporting and Braga.

The squad will miss injured Renato Sanches and Tiago Gouveia, while Angel Di Maria is still waiting for the medical green light to confirm his availability.

Barcelona

Barcelona started 2025 on a high, winning the Supercopa, which marked Flick’s first trophy with the club. The competition is often described as a minor achievement, but its importance quadruples when there is a Clásico final. Winning 5-2 despite the red card, the Catalans started the year in good spirits.

Barça progressed to the next stage of the Copa del Rey by defeating Real Betis (5-1). Many fans praised this performance as the best since Flick’s arrival. The draw for the quarterfinals will be set later today.

Flick’s men came in good spirits for the match against Getafe but left the Coliseum surprised after a 1-1 draw. It marks the fifth year in a row without a victory against these rivals, despite Jules Koundé’s goal in the ninth minute.

Mauro Arambarri scored the equalizer in the 34th minute, and Barcelona were unable to see the net again despite enjoying almost 80% possession.

Getafe didn’t play a low block as expected, but it remains a compact formation with a 5-5-0 in defence, forcing Barça to find new solutions. Low blocks have remained a problem under Flick’s guidance, and he struggles to find tactical solutions.

Except for Raphinha, Barcelona didn’t have a runner off the ball who could distract Los Azulones’ defenders, leading to a stalemate between the teams.

The game became tense when Flick’s left-back Alejandro Balde was targeted by opposing fans with racist remarks. The defender complained to the referees about it. This isn’t the first time, either. Getafe’s Christantus Uche has also complained about racist chants earlier this season.

Benfica vs Barcelona Prediction

  • Prediction: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: -106 (20Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Benfica 1-2 Barcelona

Without Sanches and Di Maria, Benfica’s attack is decimated and they’ll find it difficult to cause their opposition some issues. On the other hand, the Catalans have been shaky at the back, as Getafe showed a simple plan to counter it. They aren’t alone, with four other La Liga clubs defeating Barcelona.

Benfica need to use their rivals’ offside trap against themselves by pressing Ronald Araújo. If Benfica lies back like Real Madrid, a similar fate will befall them. All of the team’s defeats came against squads who pressed them higher up the pitch, although this is risky due to Raphinha’s presence in the box.

Barcelona are expected to win, but they’ve been warned they need to be more accurate, or they’ll see draws like the dreaded Getafe.

Benfica vs Barcelona Betting Tip

  • Pick: Raphinha to score
  • Odds: +175 (20Bet)

Raphinha was one of the only active forwards against Getafe while his partners were looking to hog the ball. His willingness to run behind the defenders to find the ball in the box makes him a unique asset in the attack. If Flick can get Barcelona to open the match with counterattacks, they’re likely to win.

The club announced that Dani Olmo is injured yet again and will miss this clash against Benfica.
