FC Barcelona

Hansi Flick rested Iñaki Peña for Barcelona’s match against Benfica, giving Wojciech Szczęsny the chance to start. The move surprised many, and Flick’s decision almost backfired. By half-time, the Catalans were trailing 3-1, with the Polish goalkeeper’s clumsiness giving two goals away.

Barcelona unexpectedly played one of their worst games, with most players playing under their expected level, except for Pedri. The Catalans often gave possession away, and could not defend well either. Pedri and Raphinha helped Barcelona come back, with Eric Garcia and Ferrán Torres also providing key contributions. The Catalans remain second in the Champions League, only three points behind Liverpool.

Eric Garcia was rumoured to leave the club in the near future, but the two potential suitors, Girona and Como, didn’t present any offer. His offensive contribution against Benfica also reinforced Flick’s plans for him as a substitute in the midfield when he’s needed. With the victory, Barcelona joined Liverpool as the only team to be already mathematically qualified for the Champions League knockout round.

Barcelona are likely to focus on La Liga in the coming weeks, ranking third and trailing 7 points behind Real Madrid. Flick’s team couldn’t solve Getafe’s compact block (1-1), leading Flick to praise his opponents.

Ter Stegen, Christensen, Bernal and Iñigo Martínez remain sidelined. This week Araujo renewed his contract, keeping him with the club until 2031.

Valencia

The 2024-25 season has been one of Valencia’s most challenging, with Los Che sitting in 19th place and facing the threat of relegation. Carlos Corberan was appointed shortly after Christmas. According to left-back Gayà, Corberan insists that his team plays an intense brand of football, where they dominate play in and out of possession.

The coach is known for obsessively studying Flick’s ideas, even before he was appointed by Valencia. He previously coached West Bromwich, and was said to watch hours of matches featuring Flick as the head coach. According to Relevo, Corberan likes to analyze teams in his free time, leading him to watch Flick’s current Barcelona regularly.

Valencia defeated Real Sociedad with a narrow but convincing victory (1-0), with Hugo Duro scoring the only goal of the match in the 26th minute. Valencia only registered 35% possession, but their final third actions were more conclusive, leading to 1.64xG (against 0.81 for Real Sociedad).

Valencia defeated Ourense in the Copa del Rey RO16 and will face Barcelona again 10 days after the clash in La Liga.

Cristhian Mosquera is suspended for the match, while Enzo Barrenechea will be sidelined due to injury. Umar Sadiq is working on his recovery, although his availability for the match on Sunday remains a doubt.

The latest news is that Valencia is in concurrent negotiations with two players: Eljif Elmas (potential loan without purchase option) and Suso Fernández (free transfer with optional one-year extension). The club will sign whichever player first accepts Valencia’s terms. Corberán has approved both options. If multiple players leave the club, Valencia will attempt to sign both players.

FC Barcelona vs Valencia Prediction

  • Prediction: FC Barcelona to win
  • Odds: -455 (20Bet)
  • Score Prediction: FC Barcelona 4-0 Valencia

Although Valencia won their last two matches and gave Real Madrid a tough time (2-1), it would be surprising to see Barcelona walk away without a victory. The absence of Mosquera only makes matters worse for Los Che, as they will lose a key defender. Yarek Gasiorowski is expected to replace him according to reports.

Barcelona demonstrated their attacking intensity against Benfica, showing they can stage dramatic comebacks. They particularly excel against defensively frail teams, such as Valencia.

Barcelona vs Valencia Betting Tip

  • Pick: Lamine Yamal to score
  • Odds: +185 (20Bet)

Lamine Yamal had a strong start of the season, scoring against Real Madrid in the Supercopa. Valencia left-back Gayà said he had seen him training a year ago, and instantly believed Lamine Yamal would “mark an era”

Yamal’s dribbling, as well as his crosses make him a difficult player to mark for defenders. He had a difficult game against Benfica, which is likely to make him more ambitious for this match.
