Barcelona vs Athletic Club Preview and Team News
Barcelona Team News
This is the weekend that everyone connected with FC Barcelona has been waiting for. For the first time in two and a half years, they will play at Camp Nou, which has been approved to accommodate just over 45,000 fans.
That should be a welcome boost to Hansi Flick and his team, and they’ve certainly needed one after a series of sub-par displays. The Catalans lost three of their five competitive matches in October. They headed into the international break on the back of a 3-3 draw against Club Brugge, and a 4-2 win over Celta Vigo.
Gooood morning.

Their last showing at the Estadio de Balaídos was the best Barça performance in many weeks. Robert Lewandowski returned to the lineup and offered a timely reminder of his class and worth to this side. The veteran striker scored a hat-trick and showed there are still matches where using a more static number nine could be the best approach.
Lewandowski will surely be rewarded with another start this weekend, which may mean Ferran Torres has to be content with a place on the bench. Lamine Yamal is expected to be fit, despite not featuring for Spain over the past fortnight. Marc-André ter Stegen and Gavi are still out injured, while Pedri, Marc Casadó and Raphinha are rated doubtful. Frenkie de Jong is suspended.
Barcelona predicted lineup vs Athletic Club (4-2-3-1): J. García; Balde, Cubarsí, Christensen, Koundé; E. García, Fermín; Rashford, Olmo, Yamal; Lewandowski.
Athletic Club Team News
This is a meeting of two Champions League outfits, but Athletic Club have not really looked like one this season. Their level has dipped considerably following a successful 2024/25 campaign. Prior to a 1-0 win over Real Oviedo last time out, Los Leones had suffered three straight defeats against Getafe, Real Sociedad and Newcastle
They were good value for their last victory, but it should be taken in the context of a home fixture against the weakest team in La Liga. Ernesto Valverde has been constantly hampered by selection issues, and that has prevented him from getting more than one or two of his main attacking players fit at any one time.
Given that, it’s no surprise that they’ve struggled to look like a cohesive unit in the final third. At least two of their five league wins can almost totally be attributed to the individual brilliance of Nico Williams, who was back to his best against Oviedo after a really poor run of form.
Iñaki Williams is still sidelined due to an injury, with striker Maroan Sannadi and midfielder Beñat Prados also out until the new year. Oihan Sancet could be fit enough to feature in some capacity.
Athletic Club predicted lineup vs Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Simón; Yuri, Laporte, Vivian, Gorosabel; Jauregizar, Ruiz de Galarreta; N. Williams, U. Gómez, Berenguer; Guruzeta.
Barcelona vs Athletic Club Prediction
- Pick: Barcelona to win
- Odds: -238 (20Bet)
- Correct score prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Athletic Club
Both sides would have welcomed the international break given their selection issues and busy schedules. Barcelona angered Spain by effectively pulling Yamal out of the national squad, but the teenager would certainly have benefitted from a period of rest.
With the likely exception of Raphinha, Flick should have all of his attacking players available, which will give him many options as his team plots to break down this Athletic defence. The hosts may struggle to dominate in the centre of the park to their normal extent with both Pedri and de Jong missing, but that shouldn’t prevent them from winning the game.
The visitors have failed to carve open opposing defences in recent weeks, creating 1.0 xG or fewer in four of their last six matches. Even when they do create opportunities, they are hampered by the lack of a clinical striker.
Barcelona vs Athletic Club Prediction, Betting Tip
- Pick: Barcelona to win & Under 3.5 goals
- Odds: +139 (20Bet)
In most of their recent fixtures, Barcelona have largely bossed the play, but struggled to execute their high line properly. Teams have found it too easy to launch attacks right through the centre of the pitch. However, some of those issues did look to have been improved in Vigo last time out.
They may take to the field with a slightly more conservative midfield in this game too, with Marc Casadó likely to start, while defender Eric García could also be used in the double pivot. That may result in a match that takes on a different pattern to their recent high-scoring encounters.
The hosts may not be able to progress the ball as effectively from deep areas, but their back four may have a bit more protection, not that they’re likely to need it against a misfiring Athletic attack.
