Azerbaijan’s dreams of reaching their first World Cup are already over. However, Aykhan Abbasov will hope to end the campaign on a high note, which could do wonders for his chances of taking the job permanently. 

The team have been underwhelming throughout the qualification process and lack the quality across the field to be competitive against the better nations. 

Abbasov at least made Azerbaijan harder to beat during the October international break, opting for a defensive 5-4-1 formation. Badalov, Kryvotsyuk, and Mustafazade will once again play in the important central defensive positions. 

However, the key areas of the field will likely be in the wide areas, as Dashdamirov and Huseynov will be responsible for keeping France’s wingers quiet.

Defensively, they still have questions to answer against the very best nations, as Deschamps will look to find the right balance in the middle of the park. 

However, that’s unlikely to be an issue against an Azerbaijan side that will likely play 10 behind the ball.
