The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to deliver surprises and drama every day. Individual stars have regularly stepped up for their countries, becoming heroes on soccer’s biggest stage. Strikers, for instance, often get the most adulation because goals ultimately decide matches.
Two of the tournament’s standout forwards have been Kylian Mbappé of France and Erling Haaland of Norway. They currently share second place in the Golden Boot race with seven goals, but their journeys could not have been more contrasting.
While Mbappé won the World Cup with France in 2018 and finished as a runner-up in 2022, this marks Haaland’s first appearance at the tournament.
The Norwegian was instrumental in leading his country to their first FIFA World Cup in 28 years, scoring a whopping 16 goals during qualifying. Mbappé, meanwhile, appears to be in prime form and in the right mood to win his second, and France’s third, World Cup title after the heartbreak of their defeat to Argentina four years ago in Qatar.
In this article, we examine which of these two forwards has had a better tournament so far.
Erling Haaland Has Led Norway into the Quarterfinals
Erling Haaland’s impact on Norway’s remarkable run has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has been the driving force behind their journey to the quarterfinals, saving arguably his best performance for the Round of 16, where he scored a brace against Brazil. The Manchester City star, alongside Martin Odegaard, has become the face of Norway’s historic campaign.
Haaland’s presence in the final third has often given Norway the confidence to break through opposition, and the numbers speak for themselves. The lanky striker has scored seven goals, although assists have been hard to come by. Haaland’s strength in holding off defenders and operating as a number nine has made him hard to mark.
The Norwegian has also impressed in other aspects. Currently, he leads the tournament in xG with 4.3 and ranks third in xG per 90 minutes with 1.08. Haaland’s numbers keep getting better, as he is second in xGOT with 5.4 and third in shots on target with 12. However, he has also missed the most big chances at this tournament (five), suggesting his goal tally could have been even higher.
That said, Haaland’s influence extends well beyond mere numbers. As Norway’s talisman, he’s embraced the responsibility of leading his nation back to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence. Knocking out five-time winners Brazil was arguably the team’s greatest result in World Cup history, and it speaks volumes about their resilience, which is captured best by Haaland.
The 25-year-old came into the tournament after scoring 41 goals and registering 10 assists across all competitions for Manchester City. His 27 Premier League goals earned him another Golden Boot and gave him the confidence to compete against the best in the world.

Kylian Mbappé’s Presence Makes France a Favorite
Kylian Mbappé is also second in the Golden Boot race with seven goals and shares the lead with Lionel Messi in goal contributions with nine. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner started this tournament on the right foot with braces against Iraq and Senegal before blanking against Norway.
However, the Real Madrid man provided two assists against the Vikings before scoring yet another brace in the Round of 32 against Sweden. In the Round of 16, Mbappé netted France’s sole goal from the penalty spot in what was an ill-tempered clash with Paraguay.
Mbappé has experienced both the highs and lows of the World Cup, having won the tournament in 2018 before falling to Argentina in the 2022 final. This time around, the Real Madrid star is in outstanding form, and Les Bleus remain one of the strongest contenders to lift the trophy.
Mbappé has benefited from the support of players such as Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise. The latter currently leads the tournament with five assists, but the real star for Les Bleus has been Mbappé.
The 27-year-old is the leader of Didier Deschamps’ side, with his strength, power, and raw pace making him extremely hard to pin down and mark inside the opposition box. In the 2025-26 season, Mbappé scored 43 goals and added six assists across all competitions for Real Madrid.
The Verdict: Which Striker Has Had the Better FIFA World Cup?

Both Haaland and Mbappé have been brilliant for their respective teams so far. However, if one player has the edge, it is Mbappé. While Haaland has been pivotal in his nation’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, Mbappé’s objective is bigger – to win the tournament.
No matter how well Norway perform in the knockouts, they are neither favored nor expected to lift the title, as they do not have much experience on the biggest stages, except for Haaland and Odegaard. France, however, are a well-oiled machine who won the tournament eight years ago and then finished second in 2022.
Mbappé’s role has been more clinical for Les Bleus, and the fact that he is currently second on the tournament’s all-time scoring list with 19 goals clearly shows how consistent he has been. Moreover, Mbappé is just 27 years old and should be able to compete in at least two more World Cups before hanging up his boots.

In terms of all-around play, the Frenchman overtakes Haaland comfortably, as in addition to seven goals, he’s also registered two assists. The Norwegian, meanwhile, has yet to record an assist, which highlights his role primarily as a traditional target striker, while Mbappé offers a more complete all-around attacking game.
