Chelsea’s Winger Hunt: Why Jamie Bynoe-Gittens Tops the List

Chelsea’s relentless approach in the transfer market doesn’t show any signs of stopping this summer, as Enzo Maresca will have a big budget available. The coach will look to add quality across the field with the Blues having Champions League soccer to contend with in 2025/26.

Defensive areas are a significant concern that Chelsea will look to improve, with a number one goalkeeper ranking high on the list.

However, the London club will also aim to bring in new forwards, especially after opting against making the loan move for Jadon Sancho a permanent one. If the reports are to be believed, their focus appears to be shifting to England U21 international Jamie Bynoe-Gittens

Chelsea Face Fight For Winger

A move for the talented Borussia Dortmund star isn’t likely to be an easy one for Chelsea, as Arsenal have long been considered front-runners to sign Bynoe-Gittens.

The two English clubs could get locked in a transfer war as the summer progresses, with the German club likely to demand in the region of $80 million. Chelsea has reportedly made the first move for the 20-year-old, and representatives are working hard to get the deal over the line before the FIFA Club World Cup gets underway.

Dortmund have already been made aware that the talented winger wants to leave the club this summer, and a return to England is his most likely destination.

Chelsea Need Wingers

Following Sancho’s return to Manchester United, Chelsea is light in the wide areas. Mykhailo Mudryk remains unavailable due to a doping violation, while Omari Kellyman is still a prospect for the future.

That leaves the Blues with only Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto as first-team options in the wide areas, and neither is considered a guaranteed starter.

Madueke showed flashes of brilliance throughout the 2024/25 season, but his inconsistency ultimately meant that he ended the campaign with just seven goals and three assists.

Neto didn’t fare much better in that regard after scoring four and accumulating six assists. Both players have also endured periods on the sidelines, which would be a concern ahead of a busy 2025/26 schedule.

Bynoe-Gittens Still Has Untapped Potential

Bynoe-Gittens fits the bill in terms of profile, which Chelsea aims to bring to the club. Like recently signed Liam Delap, the winger is a young English player with promise who will only improve with more playing time.

Chelsea fans will likely need to be patient should they sign the Dortmund player, as he has only played two full seasons in the Bundesliga. However, his stats do look very impressive. In 2024/25, he enjoyed his best year to date, scoring an impressive 12 goals across all competitions and adding three assists for good measure.

Therefore, his goal involvements already surpass those of players already at Stamford Bridge. Bynoe-Gittens was most proactive with the ball at his feet last term, attempting 7.46 dribbles per 90 and accumulating a success rate of just under 50%.

If the deal goes through, he could add an interesting dynamic in the forward line, freeing up space in the final third for the hugely influential Cole Palmer

Heart Could Want Chelsea Move

If Bynoe-Gittens follows his heart, then a move to Chelsea will likely be his preferred choice. The 20-year-old previously spent time with the Blues youth set-up before making the brave decision to sign for EFL side Reading.

Manchester City later snapped up his potential, before the winger opted to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Sancho and Jude Bellingham and join Borussia Dortmund for more playing time.

A move back to Stamford Bridge this summer could mark a full-circle moment. Still, his association with the club could yet be a key factor in his decision-making process should multiple teams be interested in his services.
