Champions League 2025–26: Teams Most Likely To Score Early

In the 2025–26 Champions League, identifying teams that actually hold up under pressure and start strong from the opening whistle is key for analysis and betting. 

So far, this UCL campaign has been extremely goal-heavy. As of December 30, 2025, we’ve seen 365 goals scored across 108 matches (3.38 per game), roughly one goal every 27 minutes.

But how many of them have come in the first half? Let’s take a closer look at Champions League early goals and how they can impact matches.

Manchester City

City suffocate opposition with the ball, and that pressure tends to produce early chances. Across their UCL matches, they average 59.34% possession and 91.5% pass accuracy.

They’ve been known to score quite early and close out games through possession with comfort. Case in point, during their visit to Monaco, the Cityzens got that early punch: Erling Haaland scored in the 15th minute (and again just before the break in the 44th). 

No surprise, either, that the Norwegian found the net again in the 17th minute against Villarreal, with Bernardo Silva adding another in the 40th. By the second half, the match was effectively over, with City in full control.

This season, they’ve scored four of their 12 UCL goals between the 11th and 30th minutes.

Real Madrid

Madrid don’t always look like they’re sprinting early, but the threat is constant because their finishing is ruthless. UEFA’s stats list them at 55.50% possession and 87.84% pass accuracy.

And when Los Blancos click early, things can spiral quickly. Against Olympiacos, Kylian Mbappé scored three times between the 22nd and 29th minutes. That’s not “late-game chaos” — that’s a first-half demolition job. The Frenchman is also the competition’s current top scorer with nine goals, and we can expect a lot more early goals from him.

So far in the UCL, Real Madrid have scored 46% of their goals (6/13) within the opening 30 minutes.

Bayern Munich

Bayern’s “fast start” is often more about wave-after-wave pressure than one miracle kick. UEFA has them at 54.17% possession and 89.14% pass accuracy.

They’ve demonstrated their early game prowess many times, but most notably in Paris against last year’s champions, PSG, when Luis Díaz scored in the fourth minute and then added another in the 32nd. 

That’s a team arriving fully switched on from kickoff, and it looks like they’re set to go very far in the competition, relying on the power that Harry Kane has been displaying this season, with five goals in just six UCL appearances.

To put things into perspective, Bayern have netted seven of their 18 goals between the 20th and 30th minutes.

Barcelona

If you’re looking for a team that can put you on a passing carousel until you crack, look no further than Barcelona. The stats show that the Blaugrana average 60.34% possession and 89.17% pass accuracy in the competition.

As for early goals, they’re quite prolific. Barca have scored two of their 14 goals within the opening 10 minutes and have bagged one more just before the 20th-minute mark.

Marseille

Under Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille are much more front-footed than their reputation suggests. In this season’s Champions League, they’ve already scored six of their 11 goals within the first 30 minutes, striking early against Real Madrid, Ajax, Sporting CP, and Union SG.

Even against strong opponents, they don’t just sit back and wait for set pieces. Most of those early goals have come from open play, either through transitions or quick combinations, rather than dead-ball situations.

PSG

Just like Manchester City, PSG’s early-goal danger is tied to control. The UCL stats show them averaging 63.34% possession and 90.84% pass accuracy, which is serious ball dominance.

They’re no strangers to scoring early. Against Atalanta, Marquinhos found the net in the third minute, and against Leverkusen, Pacho scored in the seventh. What that means is that the reigning champions are here to defend their title and defend it with goals.

Ultimately, their possession style allows them to dominate early. So far, two of their 19 goals have come within the first 10 minutes.

Dark Horses Capable of Early Breakthroughs

Not every early scorer is a possession monster. Some teams are built to land that first hit through intensity, transitions, and ruthless execution.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético’s early-goal example is as direct as it gets. Against Inter, Julián Álvarez found the net in the ninth minute — that’s a proper fast start. One early moment was enough to force a complete shift in the opponent’s game plan.

So far, they’ve bagged two goals before the 10th minute and another three of their total 17 before the 40th minute. And all of that with possession of just 46% when playing away and 56% when playing at home, which proves that just because Atlético aren’t playing for possession, it doesn’t mean that they can’t produce early goals.

Benfica

Benfica are teetering on the edge in the 2025/26 UCL league phase. While they’re not quite safe, they remain very much alive and still have a realistic shot at pulling off a miracle to reach the playoff rounds. 

José Mourinho’s side sit 25th in the 36-team table with six points (from two wins, zero draws, four losses) and a goal difference of -2 (six goals scored, eight conceded). But if they do continue scoring early, they may yet keep their campaign alive. 

So how early are they scoring? As things stand, they’ve netted five of their 11 goals before the 20th-minute mark, and they look highly motivated to secure their place in the knockout stages, provided they can beat Real Madrid and Juventus in their next two matches.

Early-Goal Trends From Recent Champions League Seasons

How has history shaped the trends and data? Let’s take a look:

Due to the new format, we see more games and, as a result, many more goals, with 618 scored in 2024–25 compared to roughly 375 in a typical season under the old structure. 

Within that bigger pool, early goals have become only a slightly larger slice: from 23.7% in 2021–22 (90 of 380) to around 26–27% in each of the last three campaigns, peaking at 27.2% last season (168 of 618). While it may sound modest, a jump in percentage like that isn’t something to ignore!

Another key trend is the value of the first goal. UEFA technical reports from the 2022–23 Champions League noted that in the 117 matches where goals were scored, the team that struck first avoided defeat in 90% of them and won 88 of those games. That’s right, teams that arrive to clinch the game fast are the ones that are more likely to walk away with victory.

That’s why an early goal changes everything, including how teams manage risk and how a match avoids drifting into a late shootout scenario.

This is where people get carried away, so it’s important to stay sharp.

5. Atlético Madrid: Dark horse, but a ninth-minute goal sends a clear message.
